KDE and "#" in filename

Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:20 pm
Hello there.

So, my parents were using SUSE/openSUSE in their small company since around 2004, which is a **** to configure. And it's system updates always trashed the installation completely :/

Now, I stumbled over Kubuntu some time ago and immediatly liked the system, so I installed Kubuntu 11.04
on the system, KDE version 4.6.2. And of course the are problems you never encounter on the first run.

My problem is that we need to have #'s in some filenames. The thing is: when renaming files the #'s get replaced by some random digit. (for instance: "iInvoice #123.odt" whoops, typo, better remove that "i" there -> "Invoice 0123.odt" Well, that's bett- wait, what?). Even worse, when trying to save a file, which already contains #'s in the filename, with "save as" whe file name will be just cut off at the very first #. It's especially annoying when the filename looks something like "#1234 ridiculously long filename so my dad knows what is inside so he doesn't need to open it to get to know.odt".

It seems to be a KED bug, since creating and renaming file on command line works as fine as it always did.
I also thought that this might be a Dolphin problem, but switching to Konqueror and removing Dolphin didn't solve anything.

Any suggestions?

I'll send cookies to enyone who can help :)

I couldn't reproduce any of your issues in 4.7.4.

The first one could be a bug, when renaming multiple files # is replaced by ascending numbers. You can try to upgrade to the latest version and see if it's been fixed (as said, it doesn't seem to be a problem here).

As for the second one, which application do you try to save the file with? I couldn't reproduce with LibreOffice Writer 3.4.4.

"#1234 ridiculously long filename so my dad knows what is inside so he doesn't need to open it to get to know.odt".

How about using comments (in the Information panel) for that purpose? A lot of Nepomuk ("desktop search") issues were fixed in 4.7.x, so I recommend to upgrade if you can.

Thanks for the quick response :)

Yeah, it was LibreOffice Writer. I wanted to do an update anyway, since Kubuntu 11.10 is out. But now, thanks to you, I can do it with a good feeling.

Have a nice one :)

Hehe. I hope the update will solve the issues for you, otherwise just write again and we can try to figure something out. :)

Well, the update solved the renaming problem, but LibreOffice still cuts off the filename.

AAaaand, KMail is pretty much FUBAR. Any hints on how to migrate the old files to the new one? KMail2 doesn't show anything in the folders... :(

Which version of LibreOffice?

I don't use KMail so I can't help you there, but you'll find many people with similar problems (unfortunately :() in the Office & Productivity forum.

Thank's.

LibreOffice is at 3.4.4 now, but I don't think it's a LibreOffice problem, because Kate does the same thing...

Ha, this is weird. I can reproduce this in Kate, but not LibreOffice...

I have no idea what the problem could be. At first I thought it could be something with the locale of the system, but I use UTF-8 (I assume Kubuntu uses the same).
As a workaround, how about replacing all #s with another symbol, such as _? I'm sure you can find someone who can write a script to achieve that, or you can try KRename.

I checked using these forms: "test_#.txt", "test #.txt", test_#1.odt" and "test #1.odt" and could not reproduce the issue of truncated file names in either Kate, Libreoffice or Dolphin. I use KDE Trunk (to be 4.8).

It seems to be a problem with the "KDE default" save as dialogue. I couldn't reproduce this with OpenOffice.org, which has a different save as dialogue... Well, this'll do, I guess :)
