Hi,

I have symlinks on my home directory, pointing to another hard disk where these directories are.

I created another directory and changed its icon. It works.
When I try to change the icon on these symlinks, they appear only on the places bar of Dolphin, and not on the folder view. It used to work on previous versions, I am now on 4.7.4 (Arch Linux).

It's just an eyecandy, but really helps on organizing stuff.

I can confirm this behavior running 4.8rc2, suggest you file a bug report on bugs.kde.org
