I'll answer the other questions etc just now but two things pop up to me ..........

The Red Text you sent me first

"Saving changes for existing table design is now required.
Do you want to save the design now?

Warning! Any data in this table will be removed upon design's saving!"

This makes no sense to me!!!! "Saving is now required but all data will be removed"?????? Is this a bad English translation??
How can you SAVE the data and REMOVE it at the same time?? And why??
I already had this "strange" Error Message written down on my pad here to ask about this!!!

Please read a bit closer. It says the design is saved. Not data. Since Kexi knows that the design will change, the old data won't fit to the new design.
Just like engine from your old car won't necessarily fit to the new car :)

Secondly - I hear your comments re: my OpSys so what would you recommend or what do you use yourself? Once I moved to Linux after I retired my path was Ubuntu > Kubuntu > Mint > PClinuxOS. I use the LO suite, Scribus DTP, Thunderbird, Firefox, Bluefish and many other small programmes on a daily basis and have never had OS problems. Nevertheless I'm happy to download and test another system here to see what results I get.

I am using openSUSE but this is not recommendation. Many folks use Ubuntu/Kubuntu as well. Use whatever works for your hardware, it's the major requirement.
Advantage of PClinuxOS from what I see is the new Kexi, Ubuntu's upgrade system is close to unusable: they stop supporting software upgrades and just offer security fixes.

Dedicated packages from the Kexi team are planned, possibly as a premium service. Deployment on Linux apparently has to be more costly than on other OSes (I am repeating myself).

OK - In reply to Jaroslaw's last post ......

Did you confirm that you actually had data in the file? E.g. using tool other than Kexi: sqlite3 or sqlite manager?
Yes - I checked it with Kwrite and sent a copy to you.

Have you read the red text above in this thread?
Yes and I have commented on this already. I now see your modified Error Message for Kexi 3 but I still have a problem with this!! It says to me - "You have changed the design of your table and must now save it BUT all your data in the Table will be deleted"!! This can not be correct!! I think you mean any data in deleted columns will be deleted - not ALL the data!!??

The file you sent me privately contained no data, it just contained records explicitly removed by the user.
I deleted no records from my CSV file or from the Kexi file after importation. This happened after I imported and then closed the Program and it asked if I wanted to compress!!

From the feedback you sent me privately we now know it's not the system that crashed. It gives you opportunity to report the crash using the Report Bug button, I'd appreciate you're doing that as always.
Sorry my mistake!! But as we have now established my OpSys does not support this kind of reporting which is why I asked about recommended OpSys-es and YOUR OpSys. I'm still waiting for a reply to this so that I can test one or more. I have to do this ASAP because right now I'm stuck in the middle!! I can't go back as Base will not import my csv, (and I want to get away from Base with all the problems I've had over the past few years and I can't go forward as I can't get Kexi to work correctly here!!)

Could we please use correct versions, for the record? This is confusing for the readers: your version is 2.9.11, not .11.
OK - just my "shorthand"!!

Confusing, no project listed in the Welcome screen?
We talked about this - even with all the files deleted the Welcome Screen still remembers the old Projects - you said you would add a Refresh button sometime.

Do you store files on a working HDD or maybe on an unreliable network (NFS)?
I'm on a single user Desktop so everything is on the local HDD Seagate ST3500413AS 500Gb (Split 12Gb +488Gb)

Here's sample with 1 000 000 records to test: http://kexi-project.org/download/tests/ ... 1M.kexi.xz if you want :)
I downloaded the test file but Kexi does not 'see' it under 'Open', If I 'Open With' in Dolphin I get the error that the file format is not recognized by Kexi!! I clanged the file name to remove the "xz' from the end but got the same result!!

I propose that you run share your desktop screen using KRFB and I'd connect for a minute to see what's the issue.
I'm happy to do this when it suits you. Don't know this program but have used Teamshare in the past with my ISP so am sure we can do this.

OK - I think that covers everything!! Thanks as always for the FANTASTIC support - part of what makes me think this is a good direction!!
PS - Don't forget your OpSys recommendations!!

.kexi files are binary files, kwrite is for text files. You'll see nothing. To preview .kexi files you use sqlite3 (command line) or sqlite manager GUI app.

All the data in this particular table, the message is precise, I hope. The limitation comes from the SQLite. We have ongoing task to remove the limitation but it's a big project in itself.

The file you sent me privately contained no data, it just contained records explicitly removed by the user.

This has to be confirmed when I login to your system because I don't remember such feature.

If you don't remove the column, you'll be able to have the data. This is current workaround. Another is that you remove it (programatically!) from the CSV file before importing :)
I added this wish https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=359649 "Add option to skip columns on CSV importing" but will prefer that you do so in the future so I can spend time on improving Kexi...

Confusing, no project listed in the Welcome screen?
We talked about this - even with all the files deleted the Welcome Screen still remembers the old Projects - you said you would add a Refresh button sometime.

So I see it's not Kexi that removes your files. All office apps we know behave this way: they keep the references to files in a Recent Documents list.
The list is saved as shortcut files your $HOME/.kde*/share/apps/kexi/recent_projects/ folder. You can try to remove these files to clean the list.

I downloaded the test file but Kexi does not 'see' it under 'Open', If I 'Open With' in Dolphin I get the error that the file format is not recognized by Kexi!! I clanged the file name to remove the "xz' from the end but got the same result!!

This is a big file so is compressed. How uncompress: you can google ask e.g. on this forum: viewforum.php?f=225 (Utilities forum) Or on a PCLOS forum. Or google.
You may need xz xzip or xz-utils package.

I'm happy to do this when it suits you. Don't know this program but have used Teamshare in the past with my ISP so am sure we can do this.

I would recommend to stay with what OS you have now. You can still report bug(s) (via the Report button) and wishes even if you have no backtraces support. Please do so to have better change of fixes.

Good. PS: I think no need to use RED for normal conversation :)

Hi All
Sorry I've been quiet for a while - had a big power cut here and then was not to well for a couple of days and my Partner had to go into Hospital for an Operation!!

OK - We've had some success!! After Jaraslow explained the test file he sent me was a "Zipped" file (I'm not familiar with that extension) I was able to open it and test it - It worked perfectly. So I decided to press on. I cleaned out all the old Kexi "test" file and the Last Projects area and started from scratch ...

Created a new project
Imported my CSV - Checked and all was OK.
Designed a new Form (finished to day and tested it.) It is almost working 100%

Many things I like about Kexi but a few things could be improved/changed.

I miss the Zoom function for design but I think this is in the Wish List.
I REALLY miss the ability to "micro" adjust the positioning of the fields etc - It's very difficult to get everything positioned correctly!!

I did have one crash while editing my Form (Changing the name in a Label) but it just shut down without any loss!!

Right now I have a couple of problems - I'm still unable to work out how Combo Boxes work and whenever I add photos to a record they all disappear when I Save the Record - Why is this??

I'm a much happier Puppy right now and just need to "crack" these two problems and I can then get into some serious work updating and editing all my records to see how it works with everyday use.

OK - Another problem .....

I spent this morning trying to find out how to get Combo Boxes working and can NOT find anything!!
What I need - for example - is my Text Box "Title" should contain a selectable list of Titles, ie Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Doc, Ptof, Rev etc.
How do you do this??

More importantly is the following ...
I have my Table working fine with my Form except for the photos. So I look into this and find that the import of the CSV file has imported by photo fields as text fields so I go into Edit mode and change these. I then select Save and get the message (as discussed before) that "Saving is now necessary - but all data will be discarded" So I accept and the Table is now empty!!!! So how on earth are you able to edit and re-save your Table. I have tried this several times and get the same result all the time.

Am I missing something!!!????

Hi Jaroslaw

I don't see how this is a new question - I'm still on the same subject as per the title and am chronicling my findings.

Nevertheless - NEW BIG PROBLEM
In trying to find out how to edit a Table the Kexi crashed and now will not open my file (Table or Form) - if it does open the Table is blank (as in a blank screen) but it otherwise crashes Kexi and even crashed my whole system once!!

Is there any way to at least salvage my Form??

I'm back to not being a Happy Bunny again!!!

Don't get me wrong but most questions can fit to the "Comments and thoughts of a new user" topic. In fact we should never have this topic. Other users wouln't know what's discussed here by reading just the topic.

Moreover we're not on the help but (development) discussions subforum...
