no data source in form design

Sat Mar 24, 2012 2:35 am
hi,
I'm trying out kexi 2.3.3 running on Mint 11.

I can create tables.
When I then try to create forms based on those tables I do not see the contents of the tables in the property editor. I see only the name of the table, but no list of fields.

If I add a widget directly in the form, my table fields are available in the widget data source list.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dave.

When creating a form, the form is bound to a table and table's fields are bound to specific widgets. So when you select the form you can set the form's data source (aka table) and when selecting a widget you set the field you want to bind it with (aka a table field to a text box).

So it is nature not to be able to see the field list when you have the form and not some widget selected.

I hope this answers your question.

By the way you should really try out Kexi 2.4. It has many bugfixes and introduced several new features.

hi Dimitrios,
thank you for the response.

I was going from a tutorial video I saw on youtube that showed the data-sources (fields) coming up automatically in form design when a table was selected as a data source.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 beta. Could you please tell me how I can get Kexi 2.4. I presume I have to add a different repository.

thanks for the help,

Dave

Hi Dave, Kexi 1.x had the list of fields on the side bar for easy drag & drop but in 2.x this feature is hidden for some reasons. Text boxes (or other data-aware widgets) have to be inserted by hand and data source should be assigned using the Data Source tab of the sidebar.

We plan to reintroduce this feature though after 2.4.

For step-by-step instructions see http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Handbook/B ... ta_sources

A lot of credit for the handbook work goes to Dimitrios (diggy).

The video is for Kexi 1.x I suppose.

For the new packages please look at http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/co ... e/calligra. (Disclaimer: I don't use this repository)

It's always best step to approach your distribution's creators and friendly demand fast delivery of your favorite software :) This has even more advantages: you show real demand and help others that will encounter similar problems.
