Form For Data Entry Only

Sat May 19, 2012 5:30 pm
Hi All,
Is there a way for me to make a form that is for data entry only? I am developing a database for a relatively large survey and I want the end user to be able to click on a button to "add questions". I don't want them to have to scroll through hundreds of questions to get to the last one (and I would prefer them not even seeing the other questions in this form at all as I want it really to be only for entering new questions for the survey).

Also, is there a way to password protect certain forms? Again with the adding questions, I want users only with the password to be able to add questions. Multiple people will be working on this database at the end and I'd hate to have random people adding unnecessary questions, I'd like only the lead person of the project to be able to add (and delete) questions.

Thanks for the help

Dear jmadero,
Both requests are brilliant!
The first is like "Add Data Entry mode for Kexi tables and forms".
The 2nd is worth splitting: "Add password protecting to Kexi database files", "Add password protecting to individual objects in Kexi database file"

I'd like to ask reporting these wishes at http://bugs.kde.org. This will let us schedule our tasks in order to implement the solutions.

Will do. Also not sure if you saw my other post but I think that if Kexi gets to the point of being able to do what that Access database does, it'll be a true replacement for Access. Thanks for the hard work

@jmadero I'd like to add that if you place your Kexi project on a database server and remove write permission (for all but some users) to one or more tables after they are created, you'd get behaviour that you're looking for.

If some feature is needed in Kexi, it would be: detailed rights administration, per object. It would reliably work only for server databases though, not for files. For files you could be able to encrypt certain objects, to limit access (reading and writing), or entire database. But limiting writing is hard for files if your user *already* has entire database on his disk. Maybe a tool that merges changes from files when you receive them via email could be useful. A bit old-fashioned compared to even simple server projects, but I know people wanting that. During the merge you'd be able to decide what data you're accepting. Half of the world uses far worse, unstructured spreadsheet files anyway...

Feel free to share more detailed workflows if you'd like. All this is valuable and you helped a lot already.
