Finding blank field

Thu Aug 23, 2012 1:40 am
In my Kexi contact database, how does one find a blank field? Ex. I want to purge all records of people with no addresses. How do I do a search for all people whose address fields are blank?

Thanks,
Kexian

Hello Kexian, nice nick :)

First simple idea that comes to my mind in the Data Table View is: sort the column. Empty values should go to the top.

Other solutions not available in Kexi now, for informative purposes:

"Find" dialog is unable to look for empty values I think. It could be good idea to add this function here (if interested please file a wish on bugs.kde.org).

I do not mention executing query and using IS NULL operator because if you do that, the result is not editable (this will eventually change in Kexi), I guess you may want editable data set.

Similarly to queries, Kexi will have data set's filter (like in MSA and a bil like in spreadsheets), then "column is empty" filter rule can be assigned to given column(s) to show exactly the data we're looking for.

Thank you for your answer. I found Sqlite Manager on Firefox is able to find and delete blank fields and also search on multiple fields. I'm interested in doing mailing labels with Kexi but can't figure out how to align the fields on the label. Each person's first and last names are of different lengths so the space between the first and last names will always change. This also applies to the city, state, zipcode fields, which must be on the same line. Since there are no calculated fields in Kexi, how would one do a work around so the label spaces look professional and aligned?

Thanks,
Kexian

EDIT (jstaniek): moved second question to separate thread.
