Formulae in Kexi

Sat Apr 10, 2010 12:49 am
I've had Kexi installed on my computer for some time now but I gave up with it because I found it wasn't doing the things I wanted and I thought it was somewhat complicated.
However, I have come back to it today and solved some of the problems I had (which was done by changing items in the properties).
However, I still fail to find a way of creating a field which is the total of 3 other fields (I don't see the difference between fields and widgets and I hate the term widget!)
I have three fields - b1; b2; b3 and another field "total" in which should be the sum of b1+b2+b3
I've been trying to work it out for the last 4 hours but don't seem to find a way of doing it.
I can do it no problem in MS Access and Lotus Approach - but Kexi has me baffled. I am using MS Access (in Windows XP) but each record has up to 8 images and changing records, Access just goes dead slow (and uses just about 100% of the CPU (and I've got a 64 bit dual processor!)
Any thought, please.

Re: Formulae in Kexi  Topic is solved

Hi ulcers,
Regarding widgets vs fields: widget is a graphical element, which sometimes displays data, sometimes allows to control form's behaviour (e.g. Close Button) and sometimes just organizes the form layout (e.g. a line or a frame widget). Field is simply a database column, abstract construction only related to data, not it's visual representation. Thus the field can be displayed using widgets but also on the tabular view of the table or query.

Regarding displaying totals, you can create them using queries, and then display the queries in a form or tabular view. The drawback is that Kexi so far does not allow to edit data that is a result of query.

You're right about both Kexi's deficiencies and Access' slowness and old-style utilization of modern CPUs. I can only assure that Kexi under active development.

Thanks for joining us!

Many thanks Jaraslow for that information.
I am trying to make a database of my students, with a few photos and their test results which may be up to 25 per year.
I wanted a field showing the total of the tests to date, which updates itself automatically every time there are results of a test (and then by sorting on the totals field I can find the "best student"!
Lotus Approach has a very useful numerical field called "calculated" in which you can just write a simple formula and you have your total. That easy!
I like Lotus Approach as it is a lot easier to use than MS Access, which goes far beyond what the average home user wants. Unfortunately my Approach is the 1997 version and has minor problems running on modern machines (under windows XP).
Again, many thanks for the info and keep up the good work.
