As of KDE 4.8, the drag to select rectangle is only able to select rows because it is always at 100% width. Previously, the drag-to-select rectangle could be any size and would only select file/folders that it overlapped.
Is there any way to get the old drag-to-select behavior back? There are particular instances where it is very handy.

Is this with the Details view mode by any chance? I cannot reproduce with the other types.

Is there any way to make folders expandable in Compact view mode? I can't find a setting for that anymore, it used to be under Configure Dolphin, maybe only for Details view mode. Now there doesn't seem to be and option anymore. I went through everything that seemed applicable in System Settings and couldn't find it either, unless I just didn't see it.

No, there is no option available for the old behavior. Of course there will always be corner-cases where the old behavior might be useful, but the new behavior is way more efficient for the default usecases. |

The compact-view does not support expandable folders, only the details-view. Since 4.8.0 with the new view-engine the details-view enabled expandable folders per default and the option has been removed. However users requested to get back the option (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=289090 ). Now with 4.8.2 it is possible to enable/disable the setting by editing a configuration file (see comment 34 from bug 289090 for more details). In 4.9.0 a toggle-button will be available again like in older Dolphin versions. |
