i noticed that when opening folders dolphin automatically checks for the existence of subfolders further down than the opened folder, it also checks how many items are within each subfolder ( at least when the "size" column is present). these behaviours makes opening large folders take very long and generally makes dolphin feel a little sluggish. i think providing options to disable it would make the expierience much faster and snappy (especially for non-ssd drives).

I'm afraid there is no good way to prevent that if either the "Size" is shown or Details View is used (in which case we have to find out if an "expansion toggle" (">") has to be shown. In KDE 4.11, we will only count the number of items inside subfolders for at most 500 subfolders inside and close to the visible area, so the situation will be a bit better. |

KDE 4.10 by "large folder" i mean one with with about 500 subfolders, or a folder with more than 2000 files and a few subfolders ext4 local file system
imo the performance penalty is too massive for the benefit of having that expansion toogle, since it's just a small feature in filesystem navigation. A solution is to give an option to disable checking for subfolders and show an extension toggle besides every folder, and when the user clicks it, then check for subfolders, if there are none just make it disappear then. |
