.directory files

Wed Feb 26, 2014 8:05 pm
Hi,

For a long time I was annoyed by these files, they remind me of thumbs.db I hated on Windows. I understand that Dolphin uses them in order to know how to present a directory (show previews, hidden files, etc.).
My question is how do other file managers (eg. Nautilus) handle this? As there are no hidden files created there...

Just curious...

No idea how other file manages handle this.

But you can prevent dolphin from creating those files:
In Dolphin's settings click on "General" and enable "Use common properties for all folders".

Dolphin won't remember the View settings (f.e. icons or details mode) for each folder you enter anymore of course, those settings are global then for all folders.

Thanks for the tip!
I didn't find any "General" option, but this was available in: Control --> Adjust View Properties.
Still, the .directory files have to appear in all the directories I want a special icon on, and in the home directory, where I do not want a preview.

That's not such a problem, actually. I can always ignore these files in my rsync based backup. I just wonder how other file managers do it. I'm not talking about per-directory preview (I saw that only on KDE) but setting a different icon or view mode in different directories...
