Access file order

Thu Apr 24, 2014 5:21 pm
Is there any way to order files and folders by the last time you access to them? (Not by modification time)
I find very useful groups characteristic, but it would be even more if recent files which I'm working appears in first place (It could be a picture, a sound, a pdf...all these files rarely are changed, but they are used)

Thanks.

don't see any option for this in Dolphin but the file manager Thunar (an Xfce app) does have a "date accessed" column

Note that access time of a file is not stored at all if a device is mounted with the "noatime" or "relatime" options. "relatime" has been the default for quite a while according to http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... he-default

Storing the access time on disk every time a file is accessed has some disadvantages, like slowing down I/O (because every read is effetively also a write), and reducing the life time of SSDs.

This means that even if a "Sort by access time" option is offered, it will be completely meaningless for most users, i.e., those users who do not edit /etc/fstab manually to change the mount options.
