Hi All,
I have am OpenSuse desktop computer and I try to create some local websites for development. I am a beginner with Linux and I am trying to copy files between various folders. I am logged in as a standard user. Very often I can not copy files because I don't have the right to copy to those folders, so I usually resort to start Dolphin from a terminal, with su rights. Sometimes it works (after getting a thousand warnings about invalid stuff), at other times it does not work at all. I can spend time to look for a solution on the internet, often involving the terminal, but I prefer something simpler, with a graphic user interface from start to the end. I wish there was an option in Dolphin, that in case I am trying to copy to/from a folder where I don't have permission, to be prompted for the root password. I checked options and preferences and I can't find a way to set Dolphin to start in su mode. Regards, Nick |

First and foremost: If it is development you're doing you should be in your home directory. Create a folder called ~/development or some such and work in there. If that is not practical for whatever reason simply do a

In addition to the previous answer:
Would be nice, yes, and should be possible with the KAuth framework. I think there's even a feature request about that IIRC. But it is not implemented at the moment.
There is no such option. On openSUSE you should have a K-menu entry called "Dolphin (Superuser-Mode)" (in System->File Management) though. This starts dolphin with root rights, and should work fine. Or there's also this service menu: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Op ... ent=102548 On openSUSE you have to copy it to ~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ though instead of ~/.kde/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/. This would add an entry "Open as root" to a folder's right-click menu (in "Actions") which opens the folder in dolphin as root. |

I have this service menu in Dolphin: which serves me well, I think it's http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Ro ... tent=48411 though the images shown are a bit different and don't appear to have a copy option. It may not be optimal for your needs if you need to re-enter to root password multiple times but for occasional usage it suits me well |
