I am using Dolphin 15.08.2 and picture previews don't work.

Is there something missing from my installation or is it a known bug?

Thumbnail plugin + settings

The KF5 image thumbnailers are in the kio-extras. Is it installed ?
Is the thumbnailer plugin enabled ?

Dolphin > settings > configure Dolphin > General > Previews

Image

This image is from the Arch Linux. It has KF5/Qt5 plugins available. Either official packages or AUR packages (user produced).

A KDE bug report: Bug 351894 - Missing video thumbnails after upgrading to 15.08 - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351894

The (K)Ubuntu 15.10 has video plugins for the KDE4/Qt4:
- http://packages.ubuntu.com/wily/kffmpegthumbnailer
but as default the (K)Ubuntu 15.10 is installing the Dolphin 15.08 : http://packages.ubuntu.com/wily/dolphin
This version of the Dolphin will need plugins for the KF5/Qt5.

Workarounds:

- Compile own plugins https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351894#c10 -> https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthrea ... post378570
- Use the Dolphin4 - Kubuntu forums: Dolphin - Video & Pdf Files Preview - https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthrea ... es-Preview

Thanks Rog 131, I wanted to ask, you do not think that switching to QT5 Dolphin might be a good occasion to have previews default video finally? Dolphin File Manager is definitely the best around, but it seems to me one of the few who still do notIt has video previews by default!

Someone others default settings - How I like the file managers

At here the default has been and still is:

- Remember properties for each folder
- Grouped sorting
- Details view mode

If there are folders with files with meaningful preview images then I will turn the preview on.

I share the Peter Penz's opinion of default previews - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubun ... 04495.html:

Instead I'd recommend, that (if possible) KUbuntu just adds a
.directory folder to the ~/Pictures, so that previews are automatically turned
on only for the pictures folder (or for other folders where it makes sense).

I obviously respect this opinion, but I personally do not agree, because I think the video previews are one of the things that all will add later, then secono me would be better to have the default leaving the possibility to switch them off if someone does not want or problems with them!
Also remember, that the inexperienced user does not know that to have previews must install additional packages and what they are, so it would be better still to have them pre-installed, pre-activated or not, but of course is just my opinion on my experience from user :)
