I have a collection of scientific articles in pdf that I need to organize and I've been using dolphin to help me:
The name of the article is formed by the initials of the journal, number, year and page. The title of the article is put on the comments field.
This is handy as I can keep the articles naturally organized by journal or year and read the title without opening the pdf.
However I don't know how to transport the comments from PC to PC (I have the articles in a memory stick).
I'm sure that dolphin writes the 'comments' in a hidden file and probably if I copy the file to a different PC I will be able to keep the information.
The question is what is the file and where it is?...
Also it would be good to make this kind of information easily transportable.

I suspect you cannot; you can incorporate a lot of information in a PDF's properties which will be transported to any other operating system but none of the viewers that I have installed allow you to read this information without opening the viewer.

But I suspect that Dolphin's comments can only be read if you have KDE, e.g. on Windows.

I do something similar but by abbreviating long titles as part of the filename so that they go with the PDF.

Dolphin's comments are stored in your local Nepomuk database I believe.

I've moved this to the KDE Science forum since this is exactly the sort of thing the forum was created for.

About the question, there was some interest from digikam developers of having nepomuk be able to write tags to image files, this would probably apply to documents as well. But I don't think it is currently possible.

For transportable bibliography metadata organization, I can recommend to use kbibtex. It offers the sorting options you mentioned and on top of that useful features like citing in latex documents by drag and drop from the bibliography list or searching the database.
At the moment, it is being ported to kde4 (git repo is here: http://home.gna.org/kbibtex/ ), and you may want to give it a try to see how it is shaping up or to suggest the features you would need most.

Is it already usable, then? Last time I checked, it wasn't much more of a bibtex editor than kwrite is.
I'll have a look again.

In order to access the dynamic titles of the PDF I believe you'll need to export the entire local dolphin installation in addition to just the PDF. I'm not sure where exactly the info is stored, however I'm not sure if you' find it in an editor such as bibtext or not.

This can be cumbersome I realize however I'd recommend adopting another method to generate the metanames.

I am using Zotero for organizing my references and pdfs. It's quite nice, because you can have it as a firefox plugin automatically downloading and attaching pdfs if available and it has the capability to get the bibliographic information out of pdfs itself.

My idea was a rough one but pointing to the right direction: There's an interesting project from Jörg Ehrichs (http://joerg-weblog.blogspot.pt) who has been developing a bibliographic organizer based on Nepomuk framework (as Dolphin), somehow extending kBibTex and integrated with Zotero. Let's all give him a hand

So if someone has some nice ideas what I need to add, or where I need to change the UI feel free to contact me.
