Dolphin freezes on startup

Sun Mar 18, 2012 6:54 pm
Hi

I use Kubuntu 11.10 with latest KDE 4.8.1. Since I use KDE (beginning with KDE 4.6.x), Dolphin sometimes freezes on startup or during use. Maybe it is because of a mounted SMB share.

Terminal output of a frozen dolphin session:
Code: Select all
"/usr/bin/dolphin(19672)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(19672)" Soprano: "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(19672)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"

"/usr/bin/dolphin(19672)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(19672)" Soprano: "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
QPixmap::scaled: Pixmap is a null pixmap

Does the folder you are trying to open contain a large number of files, in particular multimedia files?

If you try to open a folder containing a small number of files - on your local system - does this work correctly?

Also, have you tried reproducing under a new user?

Dolphin sometimes freezes immediately on startup.

I do not try to open a folder, just starting Dolphin.

No.

Can you reproduce the issue under a new user?

Also, if you activate the KDE File Picker (open KWrite for instance, and try to open a file) do you experience a freeze of the application?

Not tried yet.

Yes, the file dialog is also frozen when Dolphin it is.

Do you have any external mounts on your system, in particular on network media, which could potentially be unavailable?

This SMB share could be unavailable.

If you try under a new user (which, unless it is a system-wide mount point done through /etc/fstab shouldn't have the SMB mount in question affecting it) are you affected by this?

Without a SMB mount there is none of these problems.

Is this SMB mount a system-wide one, or one setup through KDE (ie. is it a smb:// url or a local url)

Ermm, the SMB share is just mounted via console after logging in.

Code: Select all
sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.2.200/ata /media/NAS/ata -o credentials=/home/ata/.smbcredentials,uid=1000,gid=1000

Okay, that is a "system-wide" mounted share as it were. This freeze is probably caused by the access to this share going down as the server is no longer reachable - or the server is not performing as expected.

KDE usually treats remote servers, even mounted in the file system, differently however so that shouldn't be an issue with regards to the required performance.

Okay, but Dolphin freezes again and again for minutes.

If you attach gdb to it when this has happened, what backtrace do you get?

I have to learn to use gdb first, but for now Dolphin 2.0 crashed today while it was frozen for about one minute. I got a crash log from Dr. Konqi.
