Hello there,
using KDE 4.7.4 (Debian testing), but missing this feature since 3.X... is there a way to see (by hovering over a file or in the lateral panel) the duration of an audio or a video file? For pictures, I can see any sort of weird information. Why for videos I can only choose to display comment, location, MIME type, Modified, Owner, Part of, Permissions, Rating, Size, Tags and Type, while the most important things (bitrate, codecs, picture size and especially duration) can't be seen (or at least, I can not)? For audio files, at least there's the sample rate, but still I can not know how long a song is until I start playing it with some application... I don't think this is very smart. So: am I missing something, or is Dolphin missing something serious? ![]() |

My system displays information about the Bitrate, Codecs, Frame rate, Width and Height for Videos (in this case a Xvid AVI)
Codec, Album, Genre, Artist, Title, Track # and Sample Rate are shown for MP3 files. I see this information in the sidebar. I do have File indexing enabled for the folder(s) containing these media files. Display in the main view seems to cause Dolphin some visual issues on my Trunk system.

Unfortunately, even in the directories I chose to index with Nepomuk/Strigi these data are not shown. Actually, it would be morally wrong if I could see the length of a movie only by activating a huge file indexer. If the video was stored on a removable media, I would have to wait for the indexer to complete its job on the entire media (even if I allowed it to).
Well, I guess I'll have to settle for this one... it's not exactly what I need and what I could find in KDE 3.X, Gnome or even Windows. It's a huge regression, in my opinion it is unacceptable in a modern file manager. *sigh* thanks for the tip, anyway. |

If I recall, use of File Indexing is not required as a file will simply be read as needed to show the metadata if it has not been indexed. This is the case under KDE 4.8.x in any case.
However, if your system does not have Strigi installed, then metadata will not be shown - as it provides the metadata.
