Dolphin hangs, citing missing nepomukstorage service

I am using XUbuntu 12.04, but would like to use KDE's dolphin file manager (and some other tools like kate that are not relevant to this issue). I installed dolphin, pulling in all dependencies. However, after starting, it immediately hangs, giving me the following error messages on the console:

Code: Select all
[user@machine:~]% dolphin
Xlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
"/usr/bin/dolphin(10134)" Soprano: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The
name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(10134)" Soprano: "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"

=== (left out several identical messages for brevity) ===

"/usr/bin/dolphin(10134)" Soprano: "Unsupported operation (2)": "Invalid model"
"/usr/bin/dolphin(10134)" Soprano: "Invalid iterator."

Before I report this as a bug, I would like to know if anyone can provide more input about this problem.

  • What provides the missing org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage service file?
  • I'm suspicious about the statement "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name" since I am on a AFS home directory that does not allow socket creation. However, moving my .kde directory off the AFS did not change anything.
  • How and where are Nepomuk, Soprano and related services controlled and configured in current KDE versions?

Many thanks in advance!

systemsettings -> desktop search -> basic settings, maybe disabling "Nepomuk Semantic Desktop" will resolve your problem

if systemsettings is not installed edit ~/.kde/share/config/nepomukserverrc
change "Start Nepomuk=true" to "Start Nepomuk=false"

Thanks for the suggestion, but enabling or diabling Nepomuk does not change anything about the problem.

I believe that this Xlib error message may be more relevant to the hanging than the Soprano/Nepomuk messages. I get all these Soprano/Nepomuk messages as well when running Dolphin from a Konsole even though the application works fine here.

Is Dolphin the only program that is affected by this issue or does this also happen when running other (KDE-)applications?

are you running multiple monitors? using Xinerama ? maybe http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=963878&page=4

The notice about the missing Xinerama extensions is just a consequence of my two-monitor setup. Complicated dependencies, but the bottom line is that it forces me to turn Xinerama off. No normal desktop programs are negatively affected by this, however, and dolphin still hung when I temporarily switched to a Xinerama-enabled one-screen setup.

@freininghaus: Yes, dolphin is the only affected program, all others run fine. Since konqueror works well, I think I can rule out problems with the underlying filesystem or the large number of entries in our home directory tree.

A failure to connect to Nepomuk shouldn't cause the problem (as I disable or shut Nepomuk down temporarily for a variety of reasons at times). Can you try and use strace on Dolphin to figure out what it is waiting for?

Do you have thumbnails enabled, or network shares on your system which could be unreachable?

I'll be away from my workplace the next week, but will try to get back to this problem the week after that. Thanks for your input so far!

bcooksley, good idea -- stracing dolphin shows that it pauses for several dozen seconds trying to open an AFS directory at a foreign research facility (my home directory is in an AFS tree, so I don't have any control over what other facilities' subtrees show up there).

Code: Select all
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/anonymizedDirAtAnotherFacility", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_DIRECTORY|O_CLOEXEC

Somehow, dolphin seems to try to access each directory in my /home tree -- this makes it look as if the program was hanging. Thus, I suppose that the error messages I posted above may not actually be relevant.

Anyway, this behaviour does not make sense for an AFS based home dir and might even be harmful to the AFS network. Do you know how I can turn this off?

Unfortunately not, I am guessing this is some form of pre-population being done by Dolphin. I'll leave this up to the Dolphin developers to look into.
