Done. Did the same things with Dolphin as in the previous step. Nothing too relevant again but here it is:

Indeed, nothing concerning thumbnails at all.... this is unusual.
What is the output of "lsof -p `pidof dolphin`" when you have one instance of Dolphin running?

Would it be possible for you to provide a link to one of the files which it refuses to generate a preview of?

They're local files on my hard drive. None I can think of which I still know the web source for, but this happens for all files of the formats I mentioned. All avi files, ogg's, exe's, etc. So it's not the fault of a specific file, since I looked at dozens of them and none of those formats work. |

If you get the full path to one of the files (preferrably smallish) then run the following, does it give you any error message?
Then use Okular to open the thumb.png file (gwenview won't work).

This pops up in a small window with the X icon titled "Information". Happens for both ogv and avi files. |

Getting closer to the source of the problem. It seems that either your system is missing the needed thumbnail plugins, or cannot find them.
Can you please provide the output of the following command?

Okay, that does not seem to include ffmpegthumbs or mplayerthumbs. Do you have either of them installed? They are required for thumbnails for video files.

I only have the ffmpegthumbnailer, ffmpegthumbs and mplayerthumbs don't exist in the repositories (either openSUSE's or Packman's). Isn't ffmpegthumbnailer the only one I need? If not why aren't the other two in the repos, and what software repository can I get them from? I prefer fixing this one if possible, since I'm trying to limit my number of repositories. |

Does the file /usr/share/kde4/services/ffmpegthumbs.desktop exist on your system?
If so, can you please post the contents of it?

It doesn't seem to exist. |

Due to the nature of ffmpeg (patents, etc), it is probable that your distribution did not ship with support for ffmpegthumbs, and thus you get no video thumbnails. Have you installed the necessary multimedia support from the applicable distribution repositories? These repositories should contain the needed ffmpegthumbs package.

It doesn't ship with the restricted formats. But I installed those from the Packman repository, and I can play all mp3 / mp4 / mpeg / avi files just fine. But again, ffmpegthumbs doesn't exist in any of my repositories, and Packman contains all of those formats. Like I said I have ffmpegthumbnailer from there, and it sounds like it would be the renamed version of ffmpegthumbs. It's description says this:
