Hi all!

I am using KDE 4.9.2 on Arch Linux 64-bit but for some time now (including a couple of releases of KDE back, possibly even 4., Dolphin has behaved a little weird when I select files while in Preview mode, for instance JPEG images.

As far as I remember, selecting a file in Dolphin in this mode would just put some sort of color frame around the image and perhaps make the thumbnail a little brighter to indicate that it had been selected. Nowadays when I select images, they get a very strong tint of the color specified in the "Selection Background" field of the color scheme. If that color happen to be dark or black, the image thumbnail turns more or less back and white. Other colors in that field render the thumbnails "grayscale" but using gradients of that color.

I am not aware of any user configurable setting to control the selection highlighting of preview thumbnails and regard this behavior as a regression compared to what I am expect when I select images. After being selected, the thumbnail of an image no longer really represent the image very well. I therefore ask:

i) is this kind of tinting of selected files the expected default behavior in Dolphin? If so, what do you think of this effect?

ii) can I toggle between thumbnail highlight rendering methods somewhere? If so, where?

iii) is it a bug? If so, do you think it is a Dolphin issue or perhaps a graphics driver issue? Can you recreate it?

Weird - on my system I just get a bluish tinge over the preview image, a clear indicator they are selected. Could you provide a screenshot of this effect please if possible?

You could temporarily set 'selection background' to the same color as 'window background' and see the result to rule out ant theme corruption.
You should not see any appreciable difference in saturation or tint on selected folders/files.

Post that screenshot.

I have the same problem on a partition where I'm testing Kubuntu, KDE is 4.9.2
To be honest I wasn't sure if this was some "feature" or a bug.
Now I'm wondering if other distros will have it with 4.9.2....

It's a custom colorscheme, but same thing happens when I choose those installed by default, the selected thumbnail then becomes blue monochrome.
This does not happen under KDE 4.8
I'm using qtcurve btw. Same thing happens with Oxygen style.
Also, this is not just about thumbnails, selected icons behave the same.

Can you confirm that this behaviour occurs under a new user?
This should not occur, and I haven't been able to reproduce it either, which indicates it may either already be fixed, or that it is an issue local to your distribution or system.

Yes, same thing occurs under a new user, completely vanilla account.
Well the OP reported it under Arch, this is happening under Kubuntu...
I don't know that it's distro-specific. Anyway I only have 4.9 on this Kubuntu partition, can't currently check with any other distro.
edit: so i just tested it on fedora 18, live from USB, same issue. KDE is 4.9.2, Dolphin 2.1
I should also note I don't have a similar problem in other apps, thumbs, icons are shaded properly in digikam, etc.

What sort of graphics, nvidia?

I have onboard intel, on a thinkpad. from what i can tell from the xorg log the intel driver is used.

Could you please compare the versions of Xorg, Mesa and the Intel driver in use on those systems?
Also, which specific patch levels of KDE 4.9 is this?

@llewton: Please just submit a report at bugs.kde.org, your issue does not depend on the graphics-card or something else: Originally the strong tinting had been introduced for 4.9 on purpose because there had been some other bug-report which claimed that selected images are not recognizable in 4.8. Personally I'd prefer having a subtle frame around the images instead, but this would require some modifications in Oxygen to look fine or having a custom implementation. Probably decreasing the tinting-level might be an acceptable short-term solution. Thanks.

This is the OP again. Thanks for all the feedback, I haven't had time to look into it again until today but I can confirm it still looks wonky on my machine, now running KDE 4.9.3 on Arch.

That’s because this is a feature. I filed a bug here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309722 and the dev said they would find a new solution for tinting for 4.10.
