I started with KDE 3.5, moved to Trinity as it became really obsolete, because my portable had low RAM memory. Recently I upgraded RAM and installed KDE 4.9 with KUbuntu, Dolphin FM version 2.1. It's a nice desktop, a bit slow on older hardware but still well usable. I have only one problem:
I don't know is it KUbuntu's fault or KDE's fault, but I can't turn inline renaming on, both in Dolphin and Konqueror. Turned double-click opening files on, but I still need to use Rename command from a menu to rename a file, not simply click on a file name of already selected file. It seems that something was upgraded in 4.9, as options from earlier versions do not exist in 4.9. It's quite annoying in a small netbook/UMPC, in which you need a match to press right touchpad button and it's not easy to press F2 (Ctrl-Fn-2). Especially if you have to rename >100 photos. Is there an option to rename files like in older Konqueror? |

Inline renaming was lost due to an upgrade in Dolphin's view engine and is back in 4.9.1 if I remember correctly. If you want to rename a bunch of files, you might want to give KRename a try.

The thing is to rename with 2 left clicks, as right-clicking in a small, portable hardware is... quite complicated. I remember inline renaming as a selectable option in Konqueror 3.5, and it caused renaming by clicking on selected file's name.
Batch renamers are good for mass algorithmic renaming, especially in pre-selected albums' folders or music files, but no algorithm can tell what is in the picture ![]() Anyway, thanks for reply. |

Well, another thing you can do if you can't upgrade to 4.9.1 is to change the shortcut for rename to something more accessible on your netbook.

Just clicking a file does not start inline renaming since KDE 4.0 AFAIK, and this is intentional. This prevents that an unwanted rename operation is started when clicking the file name, rather than the icon, by accident, or when double-clicking too slowly.
Note that you can just press F2 to rename a file, no need to do it via the context menu. |
