NOTE: Keep getting bad server requests while navigating this forum. Already ate up my last post and had to rewrite.

Is there a way to hide folders and files without putting a dot in front of them? I want the files to stay the same for the purposes of other references to them outside of my control. Major examples include the Pictures or Videos folders, or the backup files.

There's a lot of discussion around adding a .hidden text file listing hidden files and folders, but this appears to be just for Nautilus in Gnome (see e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1785905).

There's bug report 3212 dating from 2005 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3212 about a way to hide backup files in KDE.

Is there progress or a workaround in place for this? The best idea seems to be to implement to Nautilus .hidden thing.

One workaround is described using the Folder View widget but that doesn't satisfy my needs.

Bad server messages should not be occurring when posting on the forum.
If you encounter one again, please take a screenshot and send it to forum-admin@kde.org so we can investigate the issue.

As for the hiding of files/folders - to the best of my knowledge the only way at the moment is by using the Unix standard . prefix, no other method of marking them as hidden is available. Can you please elaborate on the Nautilius method?

The Nautilus method is described at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1785905 and also noticed it mentioned in other places.

Basically it seems you just create a text file called ".hidden" and put the names of files and folders you want hidden - presumably these are comma-delimited or something.

It seems like an elegant solution. Changing the actual name to hide something has unfortunate side-effects in certain cases.

Someone started working on implementing support for this in KDirLister, but apparently, he never finished it:

I would think something more like an enhanced filter syntax (~, *, &, |, parens) that could be saved as a "place" with either relative or absolute pathing would be more useful.

Hm, I thought the idea was to make Dolphin more compatible with Nautilus and other file managers by also respecting the .hidden file, so I'm not sure if doing something else entirely is a good idea. But this is out of the scope of Dolphin anyway because KDirLister from kdelibs is the class that filters out 'hidden' files.

This is apparently implemented now.
