When I use the dolphin timeline views I get results for "Last month" and some (only on two days) for "This month" and none for "Today" or "Yesterday" though I am observing this for about one week now (and trust me, I have opened documents!) ...

How can I make this work?

From my own observations, entries appearing in 'timeline:/calendar/*' views are based on the date of modification, not the date of access.

Confirmed here http://userbase.kde.org/Nepomuk/kioslaves/timeline

I haven't known, thx. There should be the possibility to change that though.
