Hello, I'm new with KDE, I've been happily using it for a month ( after years with windows xp )and for a few days now the file / application association has stopped working.
In the kickoff laucher menu the Application menu is empty and when I want to open a file the system opens a window for me to type the app with which I want to open it. it didn't work this way a week ago. I assume I must have changed something without noticing but I can't find what.
I'm using KDE 4.8.5.
Sorry if this has been asked before, I didn't find any related topic.
French and English answers welcomed!
Thank you for your enlightements

Which distribution are you using? KDE 4.8.5 is fairly old.
In any case, can you try running in a terminal the following command? It's output is mostly irrelevant - but please post it in any case.
After running this, please logout and back in again for it to take full effect. Hopefully it'll correct the situation.
Code: Select all
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

Also, have you installed or uninstalled any applications/packages recently, or installed any updates?

Thank you bcooksley,
the laptop I'm using is fairly old too, and non pae, so I ended up using this one which worked fine. I have installed packages in order to read dvd, Videolan would not read any. Guessing that must have caused the problem I have started uninstalling them. I'll try what you suggest and tell you about it.
Thanks again

Ok so here's what i got:
juliette-laptop:~$ kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
kbuildsycoca4 running...
kbuildsycoca4(2441): "applications.menu" not found in ("/home/jhanusse/.config/menus/", "/etc/xdg/menus/")

that probably expalinsthe "lack of" application!
I'm considering reinstalling again. Now I'll restart the systemnand see what hppens

Can you please try installing the kubuntu-desktop package? It should drag back in anything else which you are missing.
