I was wondering is there anyway to get rid of this annoying box that shows over selections?

Hm, cannot reproduce.
What is your distro, graphic card and driver? Also, have you turned off all effects to see whether it persists?

looks like the selection highlight in the places panel, so you could hide the places panel with F9

The main view always has one current item and an arbitrary number of selected items. Also the Places Panel has both concepts built in, even though the current item is always equal to the selected item here.
The selected item(s) are shown with a different background color. How the current item is highlighted in the view depends on the style. With the Oxygen style, I do not get this kind of box here, but the current item is underlined instead. (I admit that highlighting the item in two ways, i.e., current item AND selected item, is not particularly helpful in the Places Panel. It's not trivial to change that though because the Places Panel and the main view share most of their code.) |

If you click in another area which does not have anything in it, does that clear this effect?

This effect has been removed for Dolphin 4.14: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/119019/
Thanks for making us aware of it. It is a bit less ugly and annoying when using the Oxygen style (because the current item is simply underlined there, and not highlighted with a box), but still, it's just not necessary to add another highlighting effect to the current item in the Places Panel because it already has the selection rectangle. |
