Hello -
In Dolphin on Mint17 I have a (large) number of SRTM .hgt files. Most show a type of "unknown" (when unzipped) which is fine but between 1-3% indicate that they are tga, font or text files. Believing the file was "bad" I posted to the stack and here is the question/reply which indicates that the file is good. https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions ... srtm-files My question is is Dolphin picking up an incorrect file type or is something else going on. I checked file type using Krusader which also shows it as a tga file. A "problem" (tga) file can be found at: http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/ ... 47.hgt.zip While a "good"file is at: http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/ ... 40.hgt.zip Thanks, pitney |

Can't say why dolphin/kio declares this a TGA, but libmagic[1] misdetects it as "PDP-11 UNIX/RT ldp", where "misdetect" just means that this files header (randomly) matches the typical structure of this rather ancient format.
What is required would be srtm/hgt support in libmagic (ie. the ability to separate them from PDP-11) - it would then also be correctly identified (rather than considered random binary data) This will affect virtually all file browsers/tools on your box (except those rather relying on the suffix) [1] http://www.darwinsys.com/file/ |

Thank you for taking the time to look into this. My conclusion is that the files are ok and I am just being too cautious. It is still confusing to me why only a few files are picked up as different file types but maybe some confusion is good. ![]() Again, thanks! |
