Confirm this on Fedora 21, fresh install and updated to latest packages. Not convinced it's Dolphin specifically, more like the underlying framework for Places bookmarks (whatever that is). First symptom I had was the Root, Networks, Home and Trash icons being duplicated over and over in KDialog popups. Shortly this resulted in GUI freezes in most K-apps including Dolphin.
The .local/share/user-places.xbel looks fine, no issues there, but the .kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarls.xml file keeps growing. I delete the file and it's right back and bigger again the next time I start Dolphin. Right now I've locked that file as read only, but if I have to make any changes to Places bookmarks (which works, since Dolphin actually uses the user-places.xbel file to do this) I get no less than three rapid-fire error boxes complaining that the file is read only and it's probably because my drive is full (also, apparently it should be only one message and not display again, but a. it's at least three, and b. it comes up again if I close and reopen Dolphin and make another change). This appears to be a regression in the latest packages (with strangely Ubuntu-esque version numbers like 15.04 rather than the KDE versioning scheme like 4.14). By selectively downgrading the following packages the issue seems to go away:
dolphin-libs kde-baseapps kde-baseapps-common kde-plasma-folderview kdepasswd kdialog keditbookmarks keditbookmarks-libs kfind konqueror konqueror-libs libkonq This list resolved all dependency issues on my system during the downgrade process. Of course these are Fedora packages, so they're possibly (probably) different on other distros. These packages were all downgraded to 4.14.3, where I will have to keep them until this issue is resolved (I'm not upgrading to Fedora 22 and Plasma 5, not until I know all my panel widgets are working and I can access all my programs in the system tray where they belong). |

Thanks for your post, it really helps me.
I copy the .kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml file to my specific place for problems and I notice another copy is there. So, I remember that I had this problem in the past and I guess I fixed it temporarily similar to what you said. Now, I make the file empty and my kdialog gets back to normal. |

Hello there,
"Good" to see, that other people have the same problem. Question: is there anyone working on this "bug"? regards, tlanghammer |

This "bug" is fixed from the KDE side since months. .kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml is not used at all any more since 15.04.1, only .local/share/user-places.xbel. Bug your distribution to update their packages... But: the "homerun" application launcher (not part of KDE4 itself) causes this problem too, because it still tries to synchronize bookmarks.xml with user-places.xbel. And that in a buggy way it seems, it causes bookmarks.xml to grow indefinitely... So don't use it with current KDE4. There is a patch somewhere to fix it as well though. |

Is there a bug report that we can track? I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and am still running into this problem (though it may be the bug in homerun that I'm running into; I'm not quite sure).

You mean a bug report about homerun, or a bug report about dolphin/kdelibs? For dolphin/kdelibs all problems in the places handling should be fixed since 15.04.1 as mentioned, see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345174 . That's also where we found out (after the bug was fixed) that homerun is causing problems now. For homerun I am aware of those: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349850 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=352950 But as I understand it, homerun is dead and unmaintained. It is part of Plasma5 itself anyway, in a modified version without this problem. In openSUSE we patched out the "favorite places" feature in homerun that causes the problems. It's only useful for KDE4 anyway, which we don't support any more in the latest distribution versions. See here for the patch: https://build.opensuse.org/package/view ... h?expand=1
If you use dolphin >= 15.04.1 and kdelibs4 >= 4.14.8 (likely if you see this problem), it's likely caused by homerun, Try to remove it to be sure. |
