Hello dear community,

Since some time ago (about a month or two) and prolly after an update, files that I create using KDE > Dolphin > Create New > Text File, are not empty.
It used to create an empty file. Nowadays it creates a file containing a <space> plus <new line>.

This is not really a life of death situation.. at all.. but every time I create a new file, I find myself feeling a need to fix it because.. well.. it stands out from the rest of the system which is pretty much a blissful experience :)

I have searched the internet multiple time to try to understand where the template for this new "Text File" is stored, but although I have found information about the subject, none of it helped me track down the information about this specific template. While searching I also took into account that that there might not be an actual template for this too.
But although I am able to fix many things myself (so much wonderful and helpful information out there!)... this silly little bugger is not one of them :)

I am wondering if:
Other people are also experiencing this problem (to determine escalation or if the problem is just my own),
And if anyone knows what the problem might be (to pinpoint/understand/solve the problem).

Oh, and in general, if the problem should be escalated (more people are experiencing the same problem), how should I go about reporting a bug? I read the word "Issues" in the FAQ of this form, and in the context written in the FAQ I assume issues (bugs) should be reported here (prolly discussed here and if relevant someone from core team will escalate?), am I right?.

If anyone can point me into the right direction, much obliged.

Much much thanx!

Move the desktop files and file templates for the "Create New..." menu from kde-baseapps to kio: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/124983/

With the basic model there are no /templates folder - the kio is showing:

Earlier: viewtopic.php?f=224&t=126778#p342342

The Neon is an hybrid - mix of Neon and the Ubuntu repositories: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keyw ... ection=all

More templates - installed to the /usr/share/templates/ - https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/all/ ... s/filelist :

User can create/edit templates

Adding my own templates to 'Create New' menu: viewtopic.php?f=224&t=119342

example - truly empty 'Text File'

Making:

$HOME/.local/share/templates/TextFile.desktop:
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Text File (empty)...

Comment=Enter text filename:

Type=Link
URL=.source/TextFile-empty.txt
Icon=text-plain

and touching $HOME/.local/share/templates/.source/TextFile-empty.txt :
i.e.
Code: Select all
mkdir -p $HOME/.local/share/templates/.source/

and
Code: Select all
touch $HOME/.local/share/templates/.source/TextFile-empty.txt

=> new option to make truly empty text files:

@lueck
I'm impressed :) You literally found the cause of the problem.. and I thought I might have gone crazy..

@Rog131
Awesome! This is what I've been searching for on the internet but could not find. Very clear and detailed explanation :)
I have created a new entry, and works flawlessly.

You guys rock! :)
Thank you!
