Hi all!
I'm experiencing problems getting various file metadata presented i Dolphins detailed view.
Everything related to pictures is empty in detailed view columns, but exists on right click -> properties -> details:
-Date photo taken
-Width, height, orientation

No problems with the basics: Name, Size, Modified, Type, however
-Date created shows for files/folders on a samba mount, which hosts a usb-drive on Fuse blk fs.
-Date created is empty when listing files on my local drive which is ext4. Also empty using an usb-drive with exfat.
No idea if fs-type is relevant, but thats the only difference i came to think of.

I've googled around and got that i should try disabling Baloo, also purged the index and rebooted, but to no avail.
Dolphin seems like a really useful and cool file manager, however i need metadata in columns when handling photos.

I'm thankful for any help!

Im on Arch Linux and i3wm
Code: Select all
dolphin -v
qt5ct: using qt5ct plugin
dolphin 19.12.0

Disabling Baloo is probably the wrong thing to do, as it is needed to create the search index which Dolphin uses to display metadata.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I have the same issue. Image metadata columns are empty.
I'm on Debian 10.4 XFCE edition with Dolphin 18.08.0

Do I have to install the whole Plasma metapackage and log into a Plasma session? If possible I'd like to avoid that, as I only need Dolphin and prefer XFCE for all the rest.

I also tried disabling Baloo and it only worked for the side panel (F11), not the columns.

When re-enabling it I got this:
Code: Select all
$ balooctl enable
Enabling the File Indexer
$ QCoreApplication::arguments: Please instantiate the QApplication object first
QCoreApplication::applicationDirPath: Please instantiate the QApplication object first
This process needs a QCoreApplication instance in order to use KCrash

Ok so it turns out the issue only applies to certain directories (apparently my secondary hard drive).

However, when it happens, the following command fixes it:
Code: Select all
balooctl index /path/to/folder/*/*

Each added /* adds a depth level for indexing in multiple subfolders at once (it will only index the files at the last depth level). The last * is to take all the files in the folder.

After the indexing is done, refreshing Dolphin with F5 made the metadata appear.

Brilliant! :-*

I needed to get some photos and videos sorted by width/height and I couldn't get it work... Re-indexing really fixes it! Thank you! <3

Haven't rebooted yet to see if it stays but I will keep an eye on that. Furthermore, I think I have an idea why baloo screws up with the secondary drive: Perhaps it is just not ready.

I had a similar problem for moths, nay!, years: My gerbera server worked nicely after indexing (secondary drive mounted into home) it but always lost after reboot, even though it was supposed to constantly scan it. Problem was: As a mechanical drive it wasn't mounted in time for scanning. Mounting took easily up to 1 minute (well, mechanical and encrypted) and gerbera just went ahead and claimed rightfully there is nothing to scan...
