Hello,

After installing KDE Plasma on my Pop OS 20.04, on Gnome the default file manager for Firefox, Chrome and Brave is now Dolphin. Even on a new created user, so the issue might be on
Code: Select all
/usr/share/applications/

I already changed inode/directory line of the file /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:

Code: Select all
inode/directory=org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop;org.gnome.baobab.desktop;org.kde.dolphin.desktop;org.kde.gwenview.desktop;

But Dolphin is still the default file manager on Gnome / Firefox / Chrome / Brave on Gnome.

I also tried:
Code: Select all
xdg-mime default org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop inode/directory

What can I do?

I want to use both KDE Plasma and Gnome with differents users but I need to get Gnome working fine as well.

Thank you for your help,
Vincent.

Very strange, it worked only 20 seconds, Chrome launched Files (Nautilus) and then it switched to Dolphin. There might be a KDE process modifying this setting whereas I am using Gnome!

How exactly did you install plasma? If you installed kubuntu-desktop, as opposed to kde-plasma-desktop, this probably pulled in the bits Kubuntu uses to integrate the KDE file picker (NOT Dolphin) into the browsers. I *believe* this is related to xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-kde/xdg-desktop-portal-gtk, but I don't know this is integrated and switched when using 'competing' desktops. I am making an educated guess that the full kubuntu-desktop added something that is starting some service that is running this even in a Gnome session, as the mega- metapackage kubun ut-desktop pulls in *everything* used on a standalone Kubuntu install, including things that might compete with one's stock desktop environment.

I just don't know what it would be. You might look at your running processes and see if there is anything obviously plasma related running in a Gnome session, which would make it easier to figure out what to disable.

if you had installed just Plasma to your Pop (via kde-plasma-desktop), as opposed to the full Kubuntu setup via kubuntu-desktop, this integration probably would not have been included. Despite what the internet says, installing a full *-desktop metapackage is not the best way to have multiple desktops, at least not in recent years.

I am having trouble finding out how to reverse this, as 99.99% of the content is about going the other way, as the native Firefox, gtk, and other browsers' file pickers are terrible to most KDE users.

Thank you claydoh for your help.

According to my bash_history file I installed it with these command lines:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install plasma-desktop

And then I installed these packages
Code: Select all
sudo apt install cmake extra-cmake-modules qtdeclarative5-dev libqt5x11extras5-dev libkf5iconthemes-dev libkf5plasma-dev libkf5windowsystem-dev libkf5declarative-dev libkf5xmlgui-dev libkf5activities-dev build-essential libxcb-util-dev libkf5wayland-dev git gettext libkf5archive-dev libkf5notifications-dev libxcb-util0-dev libsm-dev libkf5crash-dev libkf5newstuff-dev libxcb-shape0-dev libxcb-randr0-dev libx11-dev libx11-xcb-dev
sudo apt-get install kirigami2-dev

But I got some troubles so I did these modifications and deletion:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:papirus/papirus
sudo apt update
sudo apt install qt5-style-kvantum qt5-style-kvantum-themes
sudo apt remove plasma-desktop
sudo apt-get remove plasma-desktop kubuntu-desktop

And then installed it again with these command line:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install kde-standard

To remove it once again I followed these steps:
https://trendoceans.com/how-to-remove-the-kde-plasma-environment-in-ubuntu/

And strangely I still had the dolphin package which is opened through Chrome on Gnome.

So I deleted it with:
Code: Select all
apt remove dolphin

Now it's fine, opening a folder in Chrome with Nautilus under Gnome. But it's really strange, if I reinstall Dolphin, folders are opened with it.

I would like to use KDE Plasma but I can't figure out how to make it cohabit with Gnome.
