Hi,

I recently installed Kubuntu 20.10, I managed to create a Samba share that could be seen via Windows 7.
I then installed Kubuntu 21.04, I could not create a Samba share that could be seen via Windows 7.

Next i tried a live CD of Kubuntu 20.10 and again I managed to create a Samba share that could be seen via Windows 7.
Next i tried a live CD of Kubuntu 21.04 and again I could not create a Samba share that could be seen via Windows 7.

Using Kubuntu 21.04 and selecting Properties for my "sharing" folder, on the tabs of General - Permissions - Details - Share.
the first 3 worked as expected, but on selecting the Share tab, a white background with a round circle and zig zag lines appeared for 1/4 second.
Then that tab displayed as a white blank tab.

This seems to be a bug ?

Using Kubuntu 21.04 as well, I see no problems to create a Samba password on the Linux side at all. Did you try with a new user to rule out it is a setting in your /home space?

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Hi Mamarok

Thank you for your answer, I am new to KDE and Linux.
That is why i tried it with a live cd booted via usb drive.
To try and rule out anything i may have done wrong on my original permanent install.

When I did a permanent install of Kubuntu 21.04 ... I could create a "sharing" folder but windows could not access it.
I did try for a whole day to get it to work, but could not.
When I did a permanent install of Kubuntu 20.10 I could create a "sharing" folder and windows immediately could access it.
Both Samba's were created in the same exact way.
So at the moment I am confused ?

I must say that I am really enjoying Kubuntu 21.04 ( because of the excellent KDE desktop enviromemt )
I am gradually reducing using Windows, eventually I will switch all my work to Kubuntu :)
I have been planning the switch over the past year making sure that data ( documents. images, CAD, 3D etc ) i created in windows ... can also be used in Linux.

Thanks

Gary

Just to make sure: you are talking about two different computers, right? What error message did you get on Windows when trying to access the share?

HI ,

Thanks for your time, I now have it working by following this excellent
1 hour tutorial.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXcMxo6 ... WL&index=1

I had to delete the original samba.conf and gradually add text to a new
samba.conf file, as the tutorial had showed me.

" Windows will not accept the sharing password I set in Samba"
This was my fault, I did not realise that I had to change the Login in Windows to
that of the Kubuntu user name, i was only changing the Samba password at the Windows Login screen.

At least with the problems I have had, i have been forced to learn more
about the conf file and how to customise it. Which is all good knowledge
for the future.

While KDE desktop environment is complicated, i do thoroughly like it !
Soon to leave Windows behind. 😁

Thanks
