The title says it all, basically. When using ctrl-x, ctrl-v between folders in Dolphin, the whole plasma environment hangs up for about 5 seconds, even for tiny files. Alt-tab will switch between windows but the taskbar does not respond.
Drag and drop (and selecting 'move') is instantaneous for the same file/folder combination. Anyone know what's going on here? Is this a bug or do I have something set up wrong? KDE 4.2.2 on Ubuntu9.04

Do you have the information sidebar enabled? Could be related to nepomuk.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did have the information bar enabled... but when I disabled it the problem is still there.

Do you have folderview widgets on the desktop? Does this happen for any folder or specific ones? Can you reproduce in Konqueror or any other file manager?

Yes, I've got folderview widgets on the desktop. Strange: cut-paste using these views is fast! Whether between two folderviews, or from one folderview to a File Manager window or back again, this works as it should do.
Otherwise it happens for all folders, and in Konqueror. Looking at System Activity, there are no processes using more than 3% of CPU, and no increase in memory usage while the system pauses. |

Hm. You could try to create a new user, remove widgets one by one and see which cases the problem. (I still suspect Folderview).

Ok, that sounds like its worth a shot... but not right now. I'll let you know how I get on.
If it is folderview, that's a feature I'd like to keep. In that case I'll probably just use drag-n-drop to cut-paste stuff. |

If it's a bug in Folderview, we have to check if it's been reported (and maybe fixed already). It's strange though, since I can't reproduce. Hopefully it's not Folderview but just something silly I've overlooked

Good news: it wasn't folderview
Bad news: still no idea what the real cause is... I made a new user and added all the same widgets, but couldn't reproduce the delayed cut-paste. Dunno how related this is, but when I click on the plasma icon (yellow bean thing in the bottom right) and click 'add widgets', the add widget interface pops up and then disappears immediately. For the new user the interface pops up like its supposed to. In my normal user account I have to right click on the taskbar and select 'panel options-->add widgets' to make the interface open properly. |

I've got a new symptom:
when I copy/paste to the same directory, it obviously won't let me. But it takes the same amount of time and the same things don't work until the rename dialogue comes up. (Actually this is the case whenever a file would be overwritten in the destination directory.) If nobody has any more suggestions, should I file this as a bug? If so, what piece of software is at fault? |

You seem to have this bug, but it appears to have been fixed since I haven't had that problem since KDE 4.3 was released.

Still not sure what the problem was, but after upgrading to Karmic with KDE 4.3 it's gone.

I'm getting the same issue again with KDE4.4.2. It looks like this bug, but I'm not sure. That says it's specific to Gentoo and I am using Kubuntu (10.04).
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=221196 Closing the Information/Preview panel didn't help me. Neither did removing ~/.kde4/share/config/dolphinrc It still hangs for at least 10 seconds when cut/pasting or deleting files. Not every time, but about every 3rd or 4th attempt. One workaround seems to be to open a terminal, which brings dolphin out of its freeze immediately... sometimes. Does anybody have a suggestion what it could be, or how to fix it? |

same issue on gentoo kde-base/kde-meta-4.4.5
it hapens when making cut or pressing ctrlX on a big amount of files >1000 the more files the longer the freeze. i did try the same on a few files with 5gb sum size and there was no issue. --- did find a gentoo forum: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6496564.html and did also figure out that this issue happens in the icon view and not in the detail view. -- did open a bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257883 |

There are problems with KIO when transferring large numbers of small files. I just submitted a bunch of bug reports related to different aspects of this issue:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257911 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257910 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257907 I think fixing these, particularly the first, would help alleviate the issue.
