file manager context menu slow

Sun May 16, 2010 11:46 pm
Hey all, Im using kubuntu lucid with kde 4.4.3. The context menu in dolphin/konquerer/plasma folder view is very slow -- 2-4 secs to pop up. This does not happen in mandriva 2010 (thats kde 4.3.4 i think). My CPU gets pinned during the time the context menu takes to pop up. I've turned off all service menus, no change. I am think that the same issue was present running kde 4.3 on this but cant quite remember. Is this just a kubuntu problem? or is it a kde4.4 thing? REALLY appreciate some help on this, i'll do ANYTHING to help fix it, it drives me CRAZY.

Can you please try switching to another style such as Plastique in System Settings > Appearance > Style and see if this has any effect?

switched to plastique, no change. I'm going to try and run kcachegrind on it.

ok ran valgrind --tool=callgrind dolphin and got two files which you can find using the link below. I viewed the files with kcachegrind but dont know what to make of the data.

I wasn't able to access either of the files :(

Can you please file a bug report at bugs.kde.org, attaching those two valgrind logs?

I have

removed all file templates, no change.
removed all custom file associations, no change.
deleted .local and .config. no change.
tried changing kde theme, no change.
disabled my nvidia driver, no change.
tried changing view modes in dolphin, no change.
changed icons in dolphin, no change.
disabled nepomuk/strigi, no change.
rmed /tmp/, no change.
running out of ideas...

it is only when i right click folders/file icons though. I can right click a blank space in dolphin and it works right, I can also enable the tree view side bar and right click works like a charm. Right click also works as expected in open as/save as dialogs.

also when i try changing file permissions/icons, the "updating system configuration" progress bar loops, and in the case of changing file assocations, does nothing. maybe this is related somehow? I get "kbuildsycoca4(6670) parseLayoutNode: The menu spec file contains a Layout or DefaultLayout tag without the mandatory Merge tag inside. Please fix your file." when i try updating the icons. Maybe i should switch distros? :-/

Can you please try creating a new user to rule out interference from local configuration files?

it worked! The delay went from 2-3 seconds down to around 1/2 a second. It is still a little irritating, but I'll live :) thanks! :D

{edit} you wouldnt have any idea how to kill the .5 sec delay? cause gtk is instant...

Try disabling the animations provided by Oxygen. These can be configured in System Settings > Appearance > Styles > Configure.

no change, like i said, only the file manager has this issue, all the other programs are instant. I thought maybe it could be font rendering, so i killed font smoothing, but no change there either.

I would recommend filing a bug report at bugs.kde.org aganist Dolphin, so that this issue can be further investigated by a developer.
