Streaming remote video file instead of downloading locally

Hello,

When I click on a remote video file (over samba or ssh), dolphin copies the file locally and than plays it.

In gnome, when clicking on a remote file (samba/ssh), a player is opened immediately and starts playing the file.

I tried to understand how it works on KDE (something to do with kio-?*^&) but with no luck.

Is there a way of just streaming the file in KDE, just like GNOME (or Windows for that matter)?

Thanks,
Ofir

If there's not, this should become an idea in Brainstorm :) .

would changing the default app used to play the stream change whether it was streamed or copied and then played? have you tried opening with either vlc or smplayer? what were you playing it with?

I think it depends on the player, i.e. whether it can use KIO in streaming mode and whether it has told KDE that it can handle URLs.

Which player are we talking about?
Does it work if you open the URL in the player's own "open" interface?

Cheers,

I can confirm it happens to me when opening files with SMPlayer from Konqueror, not when opening them (as URL) from the application itself. From Konqueror they are downloaded and then played.

About if it's SMPlayer or Konqueror's fault, I can't say.

Check the file association of the file type.

For example I have KMplayer associated with, e.g. mpeg.
When clicking on edit, I can see that the actual command is this
Code: Select all
kmplayer -caption "%c" %i %m %U

The %U part tells KDE that the program can handle lists or URLs itself, %u would be a single URL.

If none of the two is specified, KDE assumes the program can only handle local files and downloads from the remote side before calling the program.

I checked that anda_skoa said and it seems smplayer is already configured with %U.

Then I noticed that I connect to the remote computer using ssh, which requires password. I entered the password into KWallet so dolphin sees it immediately but smplayer doesn't.

So I accessed the remote computer through Samba and everything worked fine.

Thanks to everyone!
