Installing services in dolphin

Fri Jul 02, 2010 9:38 am
Hi

I've just tried installing a couple of new services in dolphin using the "Download New Services" feature. I selected and installed a couple of them, but they don't show up in the services list. They are shown as installed in the new hot stuff dialog. Do I need to do something else to get them working? Or could there be something wrong with my installation?

Please try running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental", closing Dolphin then opening Dolphin again.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't help. I also loooked through the output of the command, but the services I installed are not even mentioned.

Where does it save the downloaded service? I can't even seem to find it, but it must be somewhere since the dowload dialog say's they're installed.

It should be found somewhere under ~/.kde4/share/apps/ or ~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/

I've found them under ~/.kdemod4/share/apps/servicemenu-download, but they are tarballs. Should they be extracted somewhere? Do I need to do it or should it happen automatically? They haven't been extracted to either of the folders you mentioned.

They need to be extracted, however where they are extracted to is dependent upon the Service Menu in question.

Ok, thanks. So how do I figure out where they need to be extracted to?

Shouldn't it be done automatically when they are downloaded? It seems to defeat the purpose of using the Hotstuff dialog it they then need to be extracted and installed manually.

@aquavitae: See the names of the .desktop files inside the tarballs and find out where in your kde home directory they were installed.

in my system they go into ~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/servicemenus, but some distro's use ~/.kde instead. And if placed in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ they should be available all users

From what I can make out, the .desktop files assume that the executables are in the path, but nothing has been extracted so far. Does this mean the they are just badly packaged, or doesn't kde install them properly? sO for me to install them manually I would need to add a local folder to the path (e.g. ~/.bin), then copy the exes into it, and copy the .desktops into ~/.kdemod4/share/kde4/services/servicemenus? (Mine is ~/.kdemod4 cos I'm on Arch linux)

it's been awhile but I seem to recall that the service menus I dl'ed and installed from kde-apps.org had README (instruction) and/or INSTALL (script) files in them. Have you extracted the tarballs and looked?
