Dolphin - "computer:///" option?

Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:18 pm
Is there something like in Gnome where I can see all available Drives/Partitions through accessing "computer:///"?
And I don't mean (only) "Places".

There isn't. You can use the sysinfo kio slave in konqueror. What is insufficient about the places panel?

Well not really insufficient... I just prefer to open something like "computer:///" and then choose where to go instead of opening "/" and then mounting a drive but I guess I could live with "sysinfo" regarding this "issue".

As TheBlackCat mentioned, the Places panel in Dolphin lists all drives, removable devices and favorite folders (clicking on a drive or removable device will ensure that it is mounted and take you to the appropriate directory). This was put together to be a reasonable starting place for most users.

What more than this are you expecting?

Why can't you just click on the drive in the places panel? That will mount it and then take you to it.

Because not mounted internal drives are e.g. not listed in the places menu of the "Computer" menu of the KDE-Menu...

With encrypted internal drives they are not even listed after opening Dolphin (at least in Kubuntu and aptosid but they are in OpenSuSE, however, not in the "computer" menu) which I don't understand why actually (but probably PolicyKit to polkit-1 related as OpenSuSE still provides both).

Now that you mention it I think THIS is actually what should be changed...

Regarding "sysinfo://" I had hoped to use it for mounting drives but that kinda doesn't seem to work if I click on not mounted drives there, I just get the message that there is no application to use for block-orianted devices.

Not mounted internal drives are listed for me. This seems to be a problem with kubuntu, it should be fixed on their end. We shouldn't abandon working components because of a bug in one distribution.

And even if we did, there is no guarantee that whatever is broken in kubuntu for places will not be broken for your proposed interface as well. In fact it likely will be, since generally all parts of KDE get this sort of information from the same place: solid. If solid is not reporting these drives then it won't matter what sort of interface you use, it won't show up.

TheBlackCat is correct in that Solid is the root of the problem, but Solid is simply an abstraction for hardware information backends, such as HAL. The culprit in this case is probably HAL, as explained in the other thread.
