By that I'm not talking about any animal nor myself for that matter. I'm still having problems getting the usbs to mount although I have no idea what's going on or what things are, as I am new to linux and I'm using Kubuntu 10.10, which is quite new as far as I know, so I was wondering if it wouldn't be too much trouble if anyone could help me out?
Well I'm mainly concerned about my mp3 player, because if I can't get audio notes to listen to for study it makes life painful and not to mention life is somewhat depressing without music. Well at first it didn't show up and then it did after trying different ports. I think that I may have made the mistake of pulling it out without clicking the "Safely unmount" option. It did appear again but then it came up with : (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "Mount" with signature "ssas" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist) I tried googling it, but it really didn't help and not to mention I didn't understand it much either. Well I pulled it out and tried again after downloading some apps or programs that were meant to help, but again it doesn't show anymore. Then it did again, sometimes it shows up as Walkman and others as removable media, but still same issues. Then I tried other usbs, well now I'm too afraid to pull them out because even when I click the "Safely unmount' option this comes up: (org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.NotMountedByHal: Device to unmount is not in /media/.hal-mtab so it is not mounted by HAL) , also "could not unmount the following device: etc (etc being usb, pendrive, removable media or walkman) one or more files are open within an application" even if I close everything. Sometimes I can view stuff on them, but normally that's not the case and I can't add or remove or delete anything from them. So I'm at loss as to how to fix this and I was wondering if anyone has any idea? |

This is strange since KDE 4.6 (if that's what you are running) no longer requires hal, are you using Nautilus as a file manager? is it installed? if so see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1336124&page=2

I'm using Dolphin as a file manager. Also in USB Devices only one out of three are showing of the USB devices that's actually contected to the computer. Some other programs such as Amarok are showing all of them as they should be, although usually the mp3 player shows up in other computers on different OS's as mp3 player with the brand, model, make and everything everywhere no matter what program I use. In Device Notifier both in and out of the systems tray they all show except for the mp3, it's there as Removable Media although it used to say walkman just as Amarok presently does. No matter what I can't access anything in any of them nor can I remove anything or place anything in. Dolphin came with when I installed Kubuntu 10.10. The files and folders that should be visible are not for the mp3 player, except in Amarok and only some.

It seems that KDE is using HAL on your system for an unusual reason. Please consider contacting your distribution packagers to see if they patched it to use HAL instead of UDisks.
