dolphin won't start

Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:27 pm
After using my desktop for a few minutes, dolphin won't open anymore. It works for a while after rebooting, but eventually it just won't open.

When I try to launch it in the commandline, I get this error:

Code: Select all
unnamed app(4918): Communication problem with  "dolphin" , it probably crashed.
Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

That's it. I have all the debugging symbols installed. I can still launch konqueror.

Run it as
Code: Select all
$ dolphin --nofork

and that should make the crash dialog appear.
If not, you need to use a debugger, following the instructions at http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tut ... sh_reports (pay attention to the nofork bit, which is relevant for dolphin).

Another thing to check for might be a hung Dolphin process. If this is the case, then Pino's instructions above will allow Dolphin to launch as it does normally.

Disabling nepomuk fixed the problem, and I don't have time right now to test further I'm afraid. I'll test more when I can.

I'm having a similar problem (kubuntu 13.10):

Here's the konsole output for $dolphin
Code: Select all
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QDBusObjectPath)
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceRemoved(QDBusObjectPath)

"/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/ST9750420AS_5WS33ZDW" : property "Device" does not exist

"
dolphin(2874) KSambaSharePrivate::getNetUserShareInfo: We got some errors while running 'net usershare info'
dolphin(2874) KSambaSharePrivate::getNetUserShareInfo: "Ignoring unknown parameter "server role"

info_fn: Error was Path is not a directory.
info_fn: file /var/lib/samba/usershares/carpeta vasselot is not a well formed usershare file.

I can see where the samba problem is coming from, but don't have a clue where the org::freedesktop thing is coming from.

Any ideas?

Thanks a ton!

Code: Select all
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QDBusObjectPath)
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceRemoved(QDBusObjectPath)
"/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/ST9750420AS_5WS33ZDW" : property "Drive" does not exist

"/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/drives/ST9750420AS_5WS33ZDW" : property "Device" does not exist

Those messages can be safely removed - they're likely harmless.

In terms of Dolphin not starting, does it eventually open if you leave it for a long time?
If it does, is there any additional output on the terminal, or odd behaviour you note about Dolphin (slowness, missing components or functionality, etc)?
