Check in htop or top. If the status of the affected "ls" process is "D" then it is hung awaiting IO. This likely means that the directory in question has somehow been damaged. I would suggest removing it's contents.

If you still have Samba running (or have not rebooted since the joke) I would suggest restarting Samba to free any file handles it may still have.
