Hi,
is there anything that could make dolphin show previews of pictures for example when accessing a network share folder over samba? Another question: Does each program under KDE solve file-access / streaming over samba on its own? Like vlc does stream movies over network share fine, but QMMP cannot add files from network share and either copies it itself to temp first or you have to copy it manually...? |

All KDE applications using a common system for accessing files called "KIO". KIO allows applications to access, among other things, Samba shares (courtesy of kio_smb). I am not sure of the status of being able to stream using KDE Multimedia applications and Samba shares however.
For previews on Samba shares, you need to alter the Dolphin settings. Open Dolphin > (wrench in top right) > Configure Dolphin > General. Change the "Remote files above" setting to a level you think is necessary. Please be aware that remote thumbnails will use more bandwidth and generate a higher server load. This setting will also affect browsing over FTP and other remote protocols in KDE applications.

Hi,
Is this feature not working in the Windows version of KDE. I'm browsing a Windows Server 2012 R2 and I can't get the images to show with the level at 10MG. All images our below this amount and I can view the images using Win Explorer? |

Are you browsing a mounted share (ie. Z:\ or equivalent) or browsing it via a smb:// URL?

browsing it via a smb://qudash-server/F/Downloads/, I used the "Add Network Folder" to create this.

Are you able to preview those images locally using Dolphin?

Hi,
I created a map drive via Win 7 and reopen Dolphine and know I'm able to preview the images. But, still not able to preview images using "Add Network Folder" I created earlier. What's the difference? |

A mapped folder will be seen by Dolphin as local storage, while the shortcut added through "Add Network Folder" will always be seen as a remote resource. This means a limit is being applied to restrict the generation of thumbnails at some point.
Can you try raising the remote size limit in Dolphin settings to something higher to ensure it is not posing an issue (such as 50mb)?

I've found that my system seems to disable previewing by default for remote drives. Just to be sure it hasn't done the same to you - can you please make sure previews are enabled (the toolbar button allows you to do this)?
If it is enabled - then could you try using DebugView to view the output generated by Dolphin and other processes as it attempts to generate previews?

If you mean the toolbar on Dolphine yes, I have that enabled. |

Okay. Could you try using DebugView (a Microsoft tool) to read the debug output generated by Dolphin please?

Trying to figure out how this works. I download DebugView v4.81 from http://technet.microsoft.com/, only feed back Im getting when I press the Preview on/off is: [6220] Debug:dolphin(6220)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton) KCoreConfigSkeleton::writeConfig: ..any other way to get any other info that your looking for? Nothing happens when I just enter a folder with pics. |

Damn - sounds like debug output is disabled. I don't suppose an executable called "kdebugdialog" was included with your Dolphin installation? (You may have to search the install directory to find it)
