Dolphin Copy/Move order

Fri Jan 20, 2012 12:41 am
Is there a configuration option somewhere to cause Dolphin to copy/move files in an alphabetic sort order?

Many cheap (and some not so cheap) mp3 players will play files in the order that the files were written to the usb storage. These players do not use the track tag information nor do they play in an alphabetic sort order.

I currently use a bash script to sort the files before copying to force the order that files are copied from within a bash shell. This works, but it would be nice to have dolphin copy file using whatever order that the files are sorted in the source window.

I'm not sure if you can do that in Dolphin, but if you want to use KDE's facilities (job progress shown etc) in your bash script, you can use "kioclient copy" instead of cp to copy files.

If I understand you correctly, I don't think that that would achieve my purpose; which is to copy in alphabetical order using drag and drop of a selected range from within the gui.

Thanks for your suggestion.

It might be helpful if I explain the problem that I am trying to address. Perhaps someone might have a solution.

The new car radio on my wifes car can play mp3 files from a usb thumb drive. Unfortunately, it plays the files in the order that they were copied to the drive. This results in audiobook chapters being played out of order; which is annoying to her.

I have three solutions:

1) copy the files one at a time to the thumb drive from within the gui. but some audiobooks might haveconsist of several hundred tracks. Tedious.

2) concatenate all tracks together before the copy using the cat command. This makes it harder to navigate forward and backward through the audiobook.

3) Open a bash shell and use a script to copy the files sequentially to the destination drive. This works; but it seems an awkward solution to what should be a simple task.

I am hoping that someone might suggest a better solution.

In that case I think it's not possible, but you might want to file a whishlist bug on bugs.kde.org.
