desktop-base no longer includes spacefun, how do I get it back, without installing an older version of desktop-base over the latest version?

Chances are that you still have old packages file in /var/cache/apt/archives/ . If not, you can download older version of package from http://snapshot.debian.org/package/desktop-base/.
Then unpack it (just use unp), unpack data.tar.gz file and copy selected files to certain directory. These packages are unpacked (by dpkg) on /, so it will recreate directory tree in directory where you unpack it. Just find files you like.

How do I install spacefun using this mechanism:
KDE -> System Settings -> Login Screen -> Theme -> Install new theme
Unpacking http://snapshot.debian.org/package/desktop-base/ into what I thought was the right directory did not work, though using the old package file in /var/cache/apt/archives/ did though. Do you know of a way to install spacefun from apt-get? |

The only way of installing spacefun through apt-get is installing older version of desktop-base. If you don't want to use Joy, then there is no reason to not stick with older version. You may put package on hold using aptitude or dpkg - it will not upgrade automatically then.
But I would just unpack older package version and copy files over. These commands did work for me (use root account):
I had spacefun available in KDM System Settings module.
