Can any recomend a Qt based(preferably) hdd monitoring app that can sit in the tray and monitor things like SMART attributes and temperature?

You may wish to look at KSysGuard (System Monitor) which has may be able to provide some hard drive monitoring - but not sure if SMART data is covered. I do know it does not provide system tray functionality though.

A new app was developed this summer by my GSoC student, itis not ready yet but it should see its first release next month.
