I'm assuming there is a significant difference or they wouldn't both be installed. Konsole appears to have some things that XTerm doesn't like tabs and bookmarks. What is the advantage to XTerm?

XTerm is the terminal program for X11 aka Xorg server and being very simple one. Konsole is boosted up terminal program.

They are just programs offering you a frontend (Graphical user interface) for your used shell programs like Bash or zhs (or original sh) what are responsible to present your textual input, parse it and then send it to operating system (Linux kernel) and they as well gets output from operating system and print it on screen.

XTerm advantage is that it is very lightweight, it doesn't require KDE SC but only working Xorg.
