Hello, I have noticed that some Apper installations (the new Fedora 19 for example) plaster a notification on the top of the desktop when there are updates available:
I also notice the behavior that when I click on the Apper icon in the system tray, instead of Apper opening up, a miniature window shows up with an incomplete list of updates: I have played around in the Apper settings, but can't seem to find anything which controls these behaviors. How would I go about disabling the big popup shown in the first image? Also, how can I change the behavior of clicking the Apper icon in the system tray, so that it opens up Apper to the update page instead of giving me the "short list"? Thanks for your help with this. |

As a sort of "update", I checked in "Application and System Notifications" with "Apper Notification" as the Event Source, and all the settings were the same between two systems, one with the above-mentioned behavior, and one that doesn't. So I still can't figure out what is causing this.

there are some bug reports such as https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315793 & https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318864 regarding notifications and there may be others
are the different acting systems running the same versions of the distro, KDE and apper? |

In this case, I strongly suspect the system with the unusual system tray appearance/behaviour is running a new version of Apper. If this is the case, try right clicking on the system tray icon provided by Apper, and check the settings there to see if there is anything helpful available. The settings accessible via this method could very well be different to those provided by the application.

Thanks Google. Only KDE is the same; this is with a different distro and apper version.
Thanks Cooks. The funny thing is that while the location for the configuration settings is different, they both have the same settings set to the same values. As an update, I played around with the settings in KMenuEdit -> Apper Notifications, and I was at least able to turn off the big popup shown in the first image by turning off the two "available" notifications. While these were active in my previous distro, I never got the popups, so I guess they have an affect now. I still have not figured out how to change the behavior of clicking the Apper icon in the system tray, though, as it still brings up the "short window" dialog instead of Apper itself, but at least I got rid of that crazy popup. |

Have you tried checking the settings of the Apper applet, to see if it offers an option to launch the application instead of showing a shortlist of updates?
My guess is that you don't actually have a system tray icon here - but a Plasma Applet provided by Apper.

Thanks Cooks. The only options on right-clicking the tray icon(?) are to set the shortcut, or "Share", under which it calls itself a widget. It also refers to itself as "Software Updater", and not Apper. Perhaps this is indicative of it being a widget/Applet instead of a regular system tray icon? Not knowing anything about Plasma, is there a way to have it revert to being an icon for Apper? |

Yes, that is definitely indicative it is an applet - it pretty much confirms it.
Plasma does not replace system tray icons with applets - this is usually done by the application itself. You will need to check in Apper itself to see if it offers a setting to return to a normal system tray icon.

Thanks, Cooks. Unforunately the "Settings" menu in Apper is rather sparse, and doesn't give me this option:

I'm afraid then that the behaviour you request is no longer supported by Apper. I would suggest filing a report against Apper at bugs.kde.org, requesting changes (such as an option to launch the full Apper application when clicking on the applet).

I have been searching for a solution to the same problem. The Apper Updates window when clicking review or install is much preferable to the mini notification area updates tall box.
I have a fedora 20 clean install on my desktop PC that every time I clicked the Software Update "Notification" -> "Review" or "Install" would pop the tall box in the notification area. And fedora 20 on my laptop that was installed via fedup from 18 -> 19, and here, Software Update Notification clicking review or install opens Apper's Update window. I've been searching for a way to make my desktop KDE do the same for quite some time. Searched all the system settings and context click actions. Nothing seemed obvious. I was sure this was a setting somewhere in my home dir - left over from the earlier Fedora 18 install on my laptop that was carried over during fedup 19 & 20. Yesterday - I found this solution by poking around. 1. Unlock Widgets 2. Right click on the KDE Systray's up triangle and click on "System Tray Settings" 3. In the System Tray Settings window, uncheck "Software Updater" from the Extra Items. This is the This gave me the Apper updates window back on my desktop. It does not disable new updates notification. I believe the Apper notification, click on review or install checks for the presence of the Software Updater widget in the SysTray (or whether its enabled or not) and uses it if it exists, if not falls back on Apper's updates window. Hope this helps, and solves the issue for anyone else looking.

@joelbair when posting images the img code does not take an argument, but the thumb= code does and it only takes the width

thanks @google01103 - [img] kept displaying an error - "could not detect image dimensions" or something like that. I was experimenting with phpbb code img alternatives.
