Hello,
I am not sure if this is distro specific or a KDE features, but when I shutdown and boot or reboot KDE opens some of the applications I had open previously. The problem is that it is not consistent. I have noticed this inconsistency for a years. Perhaps it only remembers a certain number of apps? Perhaps there are some files that keep track of open applications and they are not being updated for some reason? Maybe some apps can't be opened this way? I performed a reinstall and moved my home directory to the new install. Before this kate would auto open, but it no longer does even though I had it open before reboot. I know I can add create a list of things to open, but I like that it just opens what I had open previously. Thanks, Rhongomiant |

look at systemsettings -> startup & shutdown -> session management -> check restore previous session

google01103,
Thanks for the response, but there is more to it when just this setting. I disabled the setting and enabled it again. Looks like the only items that get restored are apps that have session files in the following directory. However, Firefox does not have a file in there and it always opens. Kate was not opening, but it is now. Now Gedit, any LibreOffice app and Pidgin do not open when the session is restored. .kde4/share/config/session/ Thanks, Rhongomiant |

you could try resetting everything, I think the following should do it :
- set it for empty session, hit apply - restart KDE - if there's anything in the session folder clear them out - set it to restore previous - open the apps you wish to see - restart KDE Pretty sure I had issues with things I didn't want to start starting so I changed to using empty session and set the apps I wanted started using the autostart tab in Startup & Shutdown re Firefox: - it could be started from ~/.config/autostart/ - you can try adding it (using the full path /usr/nin/firefox) to "applications to be excluded from sessions" field |

Please note that in order for an application to be restored, it needs to support XSMP (X Session Management Protocol). If an application is not reopening, it is likely it is missing support for this protocol. If an application is being restarted without remembering it's state then it is either not closing down properly on last logout, or it lacks full support for XSMP.
To my knowledge, there is no limit on the number of applications which KDE will resume as part of your session. The files in the ~/.kde4/config/session/ directory are generated by KSMServer as each application completes shutting down in accordance with the XSMP specification, and are used on next login to restart the application (at which point it should be cleaned up automatically).
