kde function f3

Thu Dec 05, 2013 7:00 pm
On the current version of KDE what is function f3 supposed to? It is either hibernating or suspending my laptop. My laptop is really fast so I can't tell the difference. On my old laptop with an old version of kde this doesn't happen. KDE 4.6.5

On my laptop it is supposed to be a hot key to increase brightness. Is there a way to fix this or move it to another key? Where can I look at all my keyboard settings?

look at systemsettings ->shortcuts & gestures -> global keyboard shortcuts -> KDE component -> KDE daemon

this should show keys assigned for power management & screen brightness

What is my Decrease keyboard brightness set to? It just says default. Does this mean its blank? It says the same thing with sleep and hibernate. One of those two obviously work or my computer wouldn't be going to sleep or hibernating.

In this case it is set to a key called "Keyboard Brightness Down" which is a friendly name for a key provided by some keyboard layouts. If your system has no dedicated key (or function key) for this then it is likely your system doesn't have it - so you'll need to customise it in this case.

I do have function keys on my keyboard :). F3 is supposed to increase brightness and f2 is supposed to decrease brightness. They just aren't working. Any idea why?

Okay, KDE should be recognising those keys as "Brightness Up" and Brightness Down" - rather than "Keyboard Brightness Up" and "Keyboard Brightness Down". That it is being detected as the sleep key instead indicates that the wrong keyboard layout is in use.

You can change the keyboard layout in use in System Settings > Input Devices > Keyboard. If the correct layout is in use then the keys should work correctly based on the actions printed on them.

Alternatively, you could simply reassign the keys to the screen brightness up/down actions - which should have the same effect. To get around the issue of this causing your system to suspend, I would suggest temporarily stopping the Power Management service (in System Settings > Startup & Shutdown > Service Manager).

Do you think there is no driver for my keyboard yet? It is set to the Generic 101-key pc. I have a toshiba satellite p75-a7200 laptop. The only toshiba layout that I see is the toshiba satellite S3000.

maybe since generic keyboards don't have keys specific to the functionality found on a laptop you should try the S3000
