Could not find service khelpcenter

Fri Jan 10, 2014 10:26 pm
A bit confused here, I read in the documentation that the khelpcenter service is part of every kde installation and yet it is missing from my install. I have gone back and recompiled from the kde4 and all other kde4 directories and yet, it is still not here. Currently running kde 4.10.5.

Thanks in advance for the help!

KHelpCenter is part of kde-runtime, which is a crucial module. That any part of kde-runtime is missing can indicate many other potential issues, including failure of notifications, inability to access password protected resources, global shortcuts not working, applications being unable to detect the network status and timezone and other localization information being unavailable.

Can you check your compilation logs for kde-runtime to see if anything shows up as particularly relevant? From what I can tell by checking the build system, KHelpCenter should always be built when building kde-runtime.

When I built the kde4 system, I use "make install clean" in the /user/ports/x11/kde4 directory as described in the FreeBSD manual. The build took quite some time and I assumed it was building everything required. I will build from the kde4-runtime directory this time and see if that resolves these issues (including the timezone from the other thread).

I really like the window environment that kde has, would hate to go back to std x11 desktop...

Thanks for the help!

While running make on the kde4-runtime package, it halted sometime last night with the following errors:

Code: Select all
gmake[5]: leaving directory '/usr/ports/databases/virtuoso/work/virtuoso-opensource-6.1.6/binsrc'
gmake[4]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
gmake[4]: leaving directory '/usr/ports/databases/virtuoso/work/virtuoso-opensource-6.1.6'
===> Compilation failed unexpectedly.
Try to set MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE=yes and rebuild before reporting the failure to the maintainer.
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make[3]: stopped in /usr/ports/databases/virtuoso
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make[2]: stopped in /usr/ports/databases/virtuoso
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make[1]: stopped in /usr/ports/databases/virtuoso
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/ports/x11/kde-runtime

Where do I set the make jobs unsafe variable to get this or compile?

In the meantime, I am restarting the make and watching where the build fails, perhaps there were other messages I didn't catch that had already scrolled by... Fingers crossed.
Thanks!

EDIT: No new messages, still failed with same errors.
EDIT 2: Ran a
Code: Select all
make clean
and am now running with
Code: Select all
make MAKE_JOBS_UNSAFE=yes install clean
I'll post the result after the job is completed.

The make fails in the same spot as noted above. I commented out the lines in the Makefile related to the virtuoso build and recompiled the package. That was successful, so now I have the majority of the kde-runtime and a working kde desktop. And a working khelpcenter!

There are some issues with Nepomuk utilities that were not built, I can live with that for the time being.

Thanks to everyone that responded.

Not a problem. Unfortunately, the build log you posted above doesn't indicate where it fell over, that portion would be further up in the log i'm afraid.
There shouldn't be too many consequences to missing some Nepomuk components though.
