Can't Add Networked Printer

Sun Feb 23, 2014 5:19 pm
I have an Epson Workforce 645 printer/scanner. I am running Ubuntu 13.10 base-system, with kde-plasma-desktop installed on top of that.

installed the drivers for the printer provided by Epson on thier website, and the printer works fine when connected via USB. However, I can't get it to work wirelessly.

When I go to Menu>System Settings>Printers and click "add printer" I don't get an option to "find network printer"
These are the only options I have: Image

I'm wondering if I'm missing some key package for wireless networking with printers, since I did a "custom" build of 'buntu. I was surprised at some of the packages I had to manually install after getting kde-plasma-desktop.. very basic stuff like kmix for sound, and kscreen for display resolution.

I tried modifying the "connection" section of the printer configuration window. I removed the original line, which was:
Code: Select all
usb://EPSON/WorkForce%20645?serial=504A4E593135303312&interface=1

and replaced it with self-generated data IPP data from the printer, to read:
Code: Select all
http://192.168.254.32:631/Epson_IPP_Printer

I know the wireless function works, I use it Windows 7 without issue.

Any suggestions or help much appreciated!

As you have an IPP address for the printer, please select "Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)" and follow the steps from there - that should allow you to configure the printer appropriately.

As automatic network discovery tends to be manufacturer specific, it is not possible for KDE/CUPS to perform this - hence why you need to specify the type of network printer you are going to connect to.

Yes, treating the wireless hookup like a completely different printer worked fine. Wireless printing now funcitonal! Thanks for the suggestion.
