Inconsistency with power settings.

Mon Feb 24, 2014 6:13 pm
Hello folks, I think this the proper venue to try and solve this, since power is system relevant.

My actual issue:
Under "power management", I've set "screen brightness", "dim screen" and "screen energy saving".
I've set 10 minutes to wait before monitor shuts off, now this works sometimes, and here is where there is inconsistency, sometimes I'll be away for hours but monitor won't suspend.
Right now I've set screen saver off, but I've tried setting it to use "blank screen" and witnessed the same result, screen wouldn't suspend or blank.
Now keep in mind I normally have Ktorrent running on the background with "avoid suspension" enabled, however, it is my understanding that it shouldn't affect the monitor suspension.

Another issue I've experienced, is that the "dim screen" timer doesn't quite work, regardless of what I put there, it was dims to 5 minutes, which is probably the default.
I've experienced this since I've started using KDE.

There is a third issue, that when my system suspends it will awake later but a powered off usb keyboard, I have to wake the computer pressing the keyboard key for it to be powered too. However this is likely to be a linux wide problem.

My system info:
Code: Select all
Debian Jessie
KDE workspace 4.11.3

With regards to the USB keyboard, this is likely a re-initialization problem - does reconnecting the keyboard allow it to function again?
It may also be worth checking dmesg in this instance - as USB initialization problems are usually reported there.

In the cases where the monitor won't suspend, can you verify that the "powerdevil" module is loaded? This can be done by checking the output of the following command:
Code: Select all
qdbus org.kde.kded /kded loadedModules

Hey bcooksley, thanks for replying.

I've checked right now and powerdevil is loaded, I'll have to check again whenever the issue occurs.
On the keyboard issue, reconnecting the usb port won't affect the issue, I've checked before dmesg and it didn't show anything, I'll have to check it again later.
On note, keyboard seems to be powered off but some keys work, the power keys, suspend for example. The only way I've to get it working is to repeatedly press enter until the light comes on.
By the way I forgot to mention, my computer is an desktop iMac model, the keyboard is a generic standard for brazil, with a few multimedia keys, nothing fancy.

Ah. Those keyboards are likely special in some manner - particularly in regards to the power/sleep keys. I'd suggest asking in communities focused on that hardware as they're more likely to know if there are any special options which can assist you here.
