Hello. This problem began two or three months ago.
I use the 'Places' sidebar in Konqueror as file manager. One such place is my user folder (/home/my name) which has my user name as its label. I have given the place entry and the folder itself a distinctive icon. The icon shows alongside the 'place' in the Konqueror sidebar and alongside the name of the folder in /home. If I open /home and from there open my user name folder, the tab shows the icon. The same was true if I opened my user name folder using the 'place' entry. Now, however, the icon does NOT show in the tab in that case. I have tried unsuccessfully to find and edit the relevant file. I edited the entry in /home/user name/.local/share/user-places.xbel but that made no difference. I would appreciate advice about correcting this strange anomaly. EDIT : The significance of the issue is that I want the icon showing in the Smooth Tasks widget so that I know which window it is.

Does your home directory custom icon display correctly if you browse to /home? Also, if you enter the directory, does Dolphin/Konqueror display the icon correctly in their respective address bars?

Thanks for replying.
Yes. The icon does display correctly in /home and it displays correctly in the address bar if I navigate to it from /home. If I use the 'place' entry, the icon does NOT show in the tab NOR in the address bar.

Interesting. If you create a new Places entry, pointing to the same place, does it allow you to set the icon on it?

Thanks again. Yes I tried that. I deleted the place entry and added a new one using the same icon. No improvement.

Hello again. What I have done is save the view profile, including the url /home/user name and showing the icon in the tab and address bar. When I launch the file manager subsequently the icon shows in the tab and the address bar. I guess that will have to do.

If you try using a different icon, does that work instead?

Thanks. No, it doesn't. I have tried it using both the standard blue folder and the bookmarks star as the icon.

Sounds like it could be a bad icon cache possibly... could you remove /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ outside KDE?
Also, are all icons in the Places sidebar being displayed incorrectly, or does it just affect the items you have added / customised?

Thanks again. I removed that folder from a Linux system on a different partition.
On logging into this system again I re-added a place entry for the user name folder in /home. I left the icon as the default. It still doesn't display in the tab or the address bar. I should mention that the same flaw was present in the system previously on this partition. All other place entries show the icon in the tab and address bar, including those I have created myself. |

Just to confirm - links in the Places panel to anywhere but your home directory, regardless if they use a default or custom icon display their icons fine?
If so, can you try to reproduce this behaviour under a new user? Also, when performing your tests with other locations, are you still using a path under your home directory, or are you using a path located somewhere else? If it is somewhere else, does it make any difference if the path is under your home directory (eg: ~/Documents)? If this does make a difference, is there anything special about the mounting of /home, such as it being network based?

Thanks again. Yes, all other place entries show the folder icon in the tab AND in the address bar.
I created a new user (guest) and the folder /home/guest/ showed the chosen icon (the bookmarks star) in the tab and address bar. I also created (in my account) a place entry to ~/Documents using first, the bookmarks icon and then the icon I have been using for ~. Both icons were displayed in the tab and the address bar. It seems that the fault is somewhere in the ~ folder and perhaps can only be corrected by removing ~/.kde from another system and reconfiguring. |

Please try removing ~/.directory - it should be a *.desktop format file.

Thanks. Doing that changed the ~ icon to the standard blue folder. A place entry for ~ still failed to show the standard blue folder icon in the tab or directory.

I expected the first behaviour - unfortunate that it didn't solve the issue though.
To eliminate any icon overrides, can you try using a different icon for ~/ in the sidebar? I'm suspecting a certain size of that icon has somehow been masked in your local user profile.
